Q&A: Why are our security monitors showing a ghost image?

Posted on April 19, 2019

Question from Carolyn L:  A convenience store not far from where we live recently closed and the owners sold all the equipment at auction.

My daughter and I bought their very old, but working security system to monitor certain areas of our little craft store.

It came with two security cameras, two monitors and the cables to connect them to two VCRs for recording the video from the cameras.

A friend of mine hooked everything up for us and it all seems to work ok except for one problem. Both monitors have a ghost image that appears to show the convenience store’s parking lot from two different angles.

The images from inside our store are displayed on the monitors but the ghost images are displayed on top of them, making it hard to follow what’s going on inside the store.

Why are those ghost images on there and how can we get rid of them?

Q&A: What are ‘Add-On Items’ at Amazon?

Posted on April 16, 2019

Question from Brandie:  I recently started doing some shopping on Amazon (#ad),  and I absolutely love it!

Their selection is simply astounding and their prices are very reasonable.

For the most part everything is very easy to understand or figure out as I go, but I’m still learning the ropes about some things.

For example, every now and then I’ll come across a product that’s listed as an “Add-On Item”.

I’m not really sure what that means. Can you tell me?

Q&A: How can I prevent messages from popping up on my YouTube videos?

Posted on April 14, 2019

youtube-logoQuestion from Robin G.:  Hi Rick. I have a question that I hope you can answer for me.

I’m subscribed to several YouTube channels, and when I’m watching any of the videos posted on one of them a big ugly message always pops up telling me to visit the channel’s website.

I already visit that website pretty often and I don’t need these reminders popping up all the time.

Is there any way to prevent them from popping up on the YouTube videos that I’m watching? They are really annoying!

Q&A: Does my camera have a bad memory card?

Posted on March 18, 2019

Question from Kelsey W.:  I bought my wife a brand new Pentax K-50 camera back in 2014 and now she’s having a problem with it.

After she first got the camera she used it almost every day for a couple of months, then she had a stroke and was unable to use it for quite some time.

Her recovery from the stroke was long and difficult, but she is now finally able to resume some of her most loved activities, including taking pictures.

The problem is the camera doesn’t work now. When she turns it on it says there’s no memory card. But there is one and it’s inside the camera.

I read the manual and it said to format the SD card, but every time I try to format it the “no memory card” error pops up.

It’s hard to believe this is happening because she was only able to use the camera for a couple of months before she had the stroke.

Do you think the problem is a bad camera or a bad memory card?

Q&A: Which VaultPress subscription do you recommend to backup my WordPress blog?

Posted on March 14, 2019

Question from James A.:  I read your post about why you use VaultPress to back up your blogs and I’d like to give it a try.

I usually publish from 3 to 5 new posts every day, and my posts tend to be pretty in-depth. That means recreating them if they were to get lost would be both difficult and time-consuming.

As I understand it if I choose the cheapest plan then my blog would only be backed up once each day. What concerns me is losing any posts that were published since the last backup was created.

My question is which of their three subscription options should I choose? I don’t want to over-pay but I definitely want to protect my hard work.
