Q&A: If I hide my WiFi network’s name will I still be able to connect to it?

Posted on June 15, 2021

Rick’s Tech Tips Newsletter

Question from Jennie:  I overheard a conversation the other day that really interested me, and I want to see what you think about it.

A young man told his friend that hiding the WiFi network name in his router would prevent his neighbors from finding and connecting to the Internet over his network.

I live in an apartment building and I’m pretty sure I have this same problem right now.

I’d like to follow that guy’s advice but I want to make sure I can connect new devices of my own (as well as those of friends) to my WiFi network with the network name hidden. Will I be able to?

Q&A: How can I prevent Windows 10 from hiding the scroll bars in Windows apps?

Posted on June 9, 2021

Question from Tammy:  Every time I load a Windows app on my Windows 10 laptop the scroll bar over on the right remains hidden until I move my mouse over it.

This happens every time I use any app I have downloaded from the Microsoft Store.

I have a health issue that makes it hard for me to control the placement of the mouse so I have trouble activating the scroll bar.

Can you tell me how to keep Windows from hiding the scroll bars?

Q&A: Is there a cheap way to block nuisance calls on my landline phone?

Question from Ellen L.:  I can block calls from certain phone numbers with my smart phone, but I also have a landline telephone that I’d like to be able to do that with as well.

I receive a lot of nuisance calls on that line, but the phone company wants to charge me a monthly fee that adds up to well over a hundred dollars a year to block them for me.

Do you know of a service or device that I can get that’ll let me block calls from the nuisance numbers that call me the most often without having to pay a big monthly fee?

Q&A: How can I print my entire Facebook ‘Friends List’?

Posted on June 6, 2021

Question from Jean:  A good Facebook friend of mine referred me to you regarding how to print out my entire Facebook friend list. Can you tell me how to do it?

Rick’s answer:  I love questions like this, Jean. Short, and directly to the point!

To answer your question, you can indeed print your Friends List, but you can’t do it from within Facebook itself.

What you’ll have to do is use Facebook’s “Download Your Information” tool to download a file containing your Friends List to your computer and then print it from there.

Q&A: How do I cancel my Zoom subscription?

Posted on June 4, 2021

Question from Kendall:  A few days ago I read your warning about how the login credentials for thousands of Zoom accounts are actively being sold on the dark web.

I wish I had found out about this before I signed up for a paid subscription. Better late than never (I hope!).

I’m sort of in a panic right now because Zoom – and possibly the hackers – has my debit card information.

I’d like to cancel my Zoom subscription but I can’t find a way to do it.

Can you tell me how to cancel it (or at least give me the link to the page where I do it)?
