Q&A: How can I get JPEGs to always open in the Photos app?
Question from Donna: I have a really frustrating problem that I’m hoping you can help me solve.
I recently installed Photoshop Elements on my computer and now every time I click on a JPEG image it automatically opens in that app.
What I want is to have them open in the Windows Photos app like they used to.
I still want GIFs and other types of image files to open in Photoshop Elements though. I only want the JPEGs to open in the Photos app.
Can you tell me how to set Photos as the default app for JPEGs only?
Rick’s answer: I’ll be glad to help you with this, Donna.
Luckily, it’s very easy to force Windows to always open .jpg and .jpeg files in the Photos app without also changing the default app for other image types. Just follow the steps below:
1 – Right-click on any file with a .jpg extension, then select Open with from the drop-down menu.
You should now see a list of apps that you can choose from, but do not select “Photos” at this time.
2 – Click Choose another app.
3 – Click on Photos, then select Always use this app to open .jpg files.
The .jpg image you selected should immediately open in the Photos app, and from now on every .jpg file you click on will automatically open in the Photos app as well.
If you’re like most folks you probably work exclusively with JPEG images that have a .jpg extension. If that’s indeed the case, you’re done.
However, if you also work with .jpeg files you can repeat the steps above and select a file with the .jpeg extension to force them to open in the Photos app as well.
