Today’s Quick Tip….

How to stop Windows Security from sending your files to Microsoft

Do you use the “Windows Security” antivirus protection app that’s built into Windows 10 and Windows 11 on your PC?

If so, by default that app sends files that it deems “suspicious” to Microsoft so they can analyze them and use the info they learn from them to (hopefully) improve the effectiveness of Windows Security’s antivirus protection.

That usually isn’t a problem, but it could be if your PC contains files that are in any way sensitive in nature.

If you don’t feel comfortable with Windows Security sharing any of your files with Microsoft you can easily flip a settings switch in the app to put a stop to it. Here’s how:

1 – Click the Start button, then type the words windows security and select Windows Security from the list of search results after it pops up.

2 – Click Virus & threat protection.

3 – Scroll down to the “Virus & threat protection settings” section and click Manage settings.

4 – Toggle the “Automatic sample submission” setting to Off.

That’s all there is to it. The Windows Security app will still protect your machine from threats but it won’t be sending any more of your files to Microsoft.
