ATTN Bloggers: You need to stop using the ‘Broken Link Checker’ plugin on your WordPress blog immediately!

Posted on November 5, 2019

If you’re a blogger you probably know how important it is to keep your blog free of broken links.

And if you do, there’s a good chance that you have a plugin titled “Broken Link Checker” installed on your WordPress blog.

If so, you need to remove it right away!

It’s recently been discovered that this plugin is compromised by an extremely dangerous XSS (Cross Site Scripting) vulnerability.

I won’t go into the details of this critical security flaw here, but if you’re interested in why it’s do dangerous you can get all the info right here.

For now, suffice it to say that having this plugin installed leaves your blog wide open to hackers.

How to limit the number of Post Revisions that WordPress will save for your posts and pages

Posted on November 2, 2019

If you have a blog that runs on WordPress you’ve probably noticed how every time you make a change to a post or page WordPress creates a copy of the previous version and stores it in the WordPress database.

These copies are called “Post Revisions”, and they can come in real handy when you want to revert back to an older version of a post. Simply select the version you want to revert to and the WordPress editor will make it happen.

But there’s a problem with these Post Revisions. Every time one is created it basically creates a new copy of the post you’re working on and stores it in the WordPress database.  [Read more…]

Q&A: Why did my blog start showing the old versions of posts I’ve updated after installing CloudFlare?

Posted on September 30, 2019

Question from Elise:  I’m hoping you can help me fix a problem I’m having with my WordPress blog.

My blog pages started loading real slowly a few weeks ago and I read somewhere online that installing CloudFlare on it would speed it up.

Well, I installed CloudFlare and sure enough the pages immediately started loading a LOT faster. Needless to say, I was delighted!

But then I noticed a problem. Whenever I update a post it shows the updated version when I view it on my computer, but it shows the old version (the way it was before I updated it) when I view it on my phone.

I called several friends of mine and asked them if they were seeing the new versions of the posts (I told them what the changes were so they’d know what to look for). Every one of them are seeing the old versions of my updated posts.

I’m the only person that’s seeing the updates, and that’s only when I’m looking at the posts on my computer. I still see the older versions when I use my phone.

Why is this happening, and how can I fix it?

Review: CSS Hero – Easily customize your WordPress blog even if you’re clueless about working with CSS

Posted on September 1, 2019

Do you have a blog that’s powered by WordPress?

If so, you probably know that WordPress is the most powerful and most customizable blogging platform there is.

By selecting a quality theme and customizing it to your liking you can give your blog its own distinctive look and feel – in other words, give it its own personality.

The thing is, to really customize all the various aspects of your blog’s theme you’ll need to make changes to its style.css file.

In a nutshell, the style.css file contains the Cascading Style Sheet (aka CSS) code that controls virtually every aspect of how your blog will look and respond to visitors when they arrive at one of the pages on your blog.

The following short snippet from this blog’s style.css file will give you an idea of what I’m talking about:  [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I delete unused images in WordPress?

Posted on May 22, 2019

wordpress-logoQuestion from Dan J.:  Hi Rick. I recently made the switch from Blogger to my own self-hosted WordPress blog with the help of your step-by-step guide to installing WordPress. I can honestly say it’s the best move I’ve ever made.

I need your help with one issue though. I have a habit of changing my mind about the images I use with my posts, sometimes more than once. The unused images always pop up in the Media Library when I go back to choose an image for a post.

How can I remove the images that I don’t ever plan to use from the media library?
