How to switch a Windows PC to a different WiFi network

Posted on July 5, 2022

If you have a WiFi-enabled Windows PC there might come a time when you’ll need to switch your connection to a different WiFi network than the one your machine is currently connected to.

For example, your laptop might automatically connect to a network with a weak signal when you know there’s another network available with a much stronger signal.

Or perhaps it automatically connected to an insecure unencrypted network instead of the secure network you intended to use.

Whatever the reason, you can easily switch your PC’s Wi-Fi connection from one network to another one with just a few clicks of your mouse. [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I limit the types of notifications I receive from Windows Security?

Posted on June 16, 2022

Question from Danny:  I’ve been reading your newsletters for over a year now, and I always learn something I can use from them.

I’ve read in several of your recent posts that Microsoft Defender and the free version of Malwarebytes make a good combination for security on a Windows PC.

When my McAfee came up for renewal I removed it and installed the free Malwarebytes, and so far I’ve been happy with that setup.

How can I limit the notifications I receive from Windows Security to just the ones that are truly needed?  [Read more…]

As you probably know by now, Microsoft is no longer releasing security updates for many versions of Windows, which means computers that are still running them are wide open to hackers and malware.

But an awesome free operating system called Linux can make using that unsafe computer safe again.

Posted on May 3, 2022

If you’re a music lover who has an iPhone, iPad or Mac, you most likely have a subscription to Apple Music that you listen to on your Apple device.

But guess what? If you happen to be a Windows user that doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of everything that Apple Music has to offer.

Truth be told, there are actually a couple of different ways you can listen to Apple Music on your Windows PC (although one way works a lot better than the other). [Read more…]

Q&A: How do I remove those annoying check boxes from File Explorer?

Posted on March 12, 2022

Question from Calvin:  I just bought a new computer and every time I select some files in File Explorer it places those annoying check boxes beside the files I selected.

I don’t need those check boxes since the files I select are highlighted anyway.

My old computer didn’t have those check boxes. I’m hoping you can tell me how to remove them from the new one?  [Read more…]
