7 tips for keeping Windows XP secure without Microsoft’s support

Posted on May 7, 2014

windows-xp-logoMicrosoft’s abandonment of Windows XP means you’re now on your own when it comes to protecting your XP-based machines against security threats.

Although they have already broken their promise not to release any more security updates for Windows XP, Microsoft likely won’t release more of them unless they feel pressured to do so.

In my opinion, the best move for XP users is to simply move to another operating system, but I realize that doing that is simply impractical for a lot of folks, especially small business owners.

If you feel that you really need to keep using Windows XP, there are several things you can do to keep your PC(s) as safe from security threats as possible:  [Read more…]

Microsoft officially ends support for Windows XP

Posted on April 8, 2014

windows-xp-logoWell, today is the big day. As of today, Microsoft has officially stopped supporting Windows XP, a move that effectively ends the useful life of the most popular version of Windows ever for the vast majority of users.

dell-inspiron-mini-12Question from Derick G.:  I read a news report that indicated that Windows XP will become unusable when Microsoft abandons it this spring. I have a Dell Inspiron Mini 12 that’s running Windows XP Home Edition that still works like a champ.

What would you recommend that I do with this computer? Sell it? Scavenge it for spare parts? Just recycle it? I really have no idea how much it’s worth, either in whole or in parts.

Q&A: How do I keep my computer’s virtual memory from slowing my programs down?

Posted on December 3, 2013

windows-xp-logoQuestion from Dana G.:  I read an article the other day that said if your computer uses too much virtual memory it will really slow down your programs and stuff.

My laptop (a Dell w/Windows XP) is running really slow lately, and I was wondering if that could be the problem. And if it is, how can I stop it?
