Q&A: If I upgrade my PC to Windows 10 for free, will it stay free forever?

Posted on July 20, 2015

Windows-10-logoQuestion from Earnest H.:  Hi Rick. I’ve heard that I’ll be able to upgrade my Dell computer from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 for free at the end of the month. I have also heard conflicting stories whether or not it will remain free forever.

Some of the things I’ve read say if you qualify for the free upgrade, Windows 10 will only be free for the first year. After that you’ll have to pay a monthly subscription fee to Microsoft in order to keep on using it. But then I’ve heard other people say that the free Windows 10 upgrades will stay free forever.

Can you clear this up for me once and for all? I’d love to replace Windows 8.1 with Windows 10, but not if I’ll end up having to pay for it after the first year is up.

Great news: You might be able to buy Windows 10 on a USB Flash Drive

Posted on July 6, 2015

Windows-10-logoIf you have ever installed Windows from an optical disc, you surely know how slow the process is. That’s because by their very nature, even the fastest optical drive is a slug compared to virtually any form of solid state storage.

We have been able to download Windows over the Internet for some time now, but before we could use the software we still had to burn the ISO image onto either a DVD or USB Flash Drive.

Regardless of which type of media we chose to use for our installation medium, it was still a hassle getting the software onto onto it. And if we chose to put it on a DVD, actually installing Windows onto a PC was still as slow as molasses on a cold winter day.

Well, it appears that we just might have a much simpler and faster option for installing Windows beginning with the official release of Windows 10.  [Read more…]

Microsoft is planning to roll out Windows 10 in ‘waves’ beginning on July 29

Posted on July 2, 2015

Windows-10-logoA few weeks ago I wrote a couple of blog posts about the upcoming release of Windows 10.

The first post explained how Microsoft is planning to release Windows 10 to the public on July 29.

The second post explained that the Windows 10 upgrade will be free for PCs running Windows 7 or 8.1.

A few weeks later Microsoft told us that Windows XP and Vista users can also upgrade to Windows 10 for free by jumping through a hoop or two.

Well, today they announced that not everyone will receive the Windows 10 upgrade on July 29 as we had been led to believe. Instead, Windows 10 will be rolled out to various classes of users in “waves”.  [Read more…]

Windows-10-logoMicrosoft told us a while back that Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for computers running either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 during the first year after its release.

Understandably, that announcement left many Windows XP and Vista users feeling left out and upset. If you happen to be one of them, I have some good news for you…  [Read more…]

Why you should install the free Windows 10 Upgrade ASAP instead of waiting

Posted on June 2, 2015

Windows-10-logoAs I explained yesterday, Microsoft has just announced that they will be releasing Windows 10 to the general public on July 29 and that users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will be able to upgrade their machines for free during the first year.

For some time there has been confusion about what would happen to all the devices running the free Windows 10 upgrade at the end of that first year.

Would Windows simply stop working at the end of the year, requiring users to purchase retail Windows licenses at that point? Or would those Windows installations continue to work and receive regular Windows Updates without having to pay Microsoft any money whatsoever?

Well, now we have the answer to those questions…  [Read more…]
