How to safely use a public (unencrypted) Wi-Fi network

Posted on January 12, 2016

wifiIt seems that free public Wi-Fi networks are everywhere these days. In fact, you’ll probably need to look no further than the nearest fast food joint.

The widespread availability of public Wi-Fi networks is great for when we’re traveling or the rare times when the Internet is down at home for whatever reason, but they do have one serious downside: They are typically unsecured.

To keep things as simple and non-intrusive as possible, the owners of most public Wi-Fi networks make them available as open, non-encrypted networks that don’t require a password. Unfortunately, these networks can leave your sensitive data wide open to hackers.  [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I prevent my LG G3 from connecting to Wi-Fi on its own?

Posted on March 16, 2015

lg-g3Question from Amanda J.:  Hello Rick. I ordered a brand new LG G3 Android phone off the Sprint website a few months ago, and I like it a lot.

The only problem I have with it is it keeps connecting to Wi-Fi all on its own, and it irritates the heck out of me.

I just found your website (which is awesome by the way) and I thought you might be able to tell me how to keep my phone from connecting to Wi-Fi until I want it to. I really hope so anyway.

Q&A: Is there a way to set up a wireless router without a computer?

Posted on March 11, 2015

wireless-routerQuestion from Darcy L.:  Hi Rick. I have a dilemma that I hope you can help me solve. My mom’s wireless router died the other day so I went to Office Depot and bought her a new one.

When I got back to mom’s house and tried to install the new router the instructions said I need to plug it into a computer and use the computer to set it up.

The problem is she doesn’t have a computer. She had a desktop PC for years, but when it died she decided to just use her email and Facebook on her phone and not replace the computer. So here we are with a new router and no computer to set it up with. Is there any way to set up the router using her iPhone 4s?

Force Windows to use a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi

Posted on December 31, 2014

microsoft-windowsThere are times when it is best to use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi-Fi even if a Wi-Fi connection is available, but most Windows installations will default to connecting via Wi-Fi even when the PC is plugged into a router or modem via an Ethernet cable.

This defaulting to Wi-Fi is quite an annoyance, but it’s one that is easily remedied. Here’s how:  [Read more…]

Turn your Windows 7/8 laptop into a Wi-Fi hotspot for free with Virtual Router Plus

Posted on November 5, 2014

wifiA while back I wrote about an awesome program called Connectify that turns a laptop into a Wi-Fi hotspot. When I wrote that post Connectify came in both free and paid versions, but they have since dropped the free version from their online store.

After learning that Connectify is no longer free, I downloaded and tested another free program that does the same thing (in fact it works with any Wi-Fi enabled PC, not just laptops). It’s called Virtual Router Plus, and I’m happy to tell you that it works extremely well.  [Read more…]
