Want your PC to charge your phone a lot faster? Upgrade to USB 3.0!

Posted on September 4, 2018

Does it seem like it takes forever for your phone’s battery to fully charge when it’s plugged into your PC?

Well, it isn’t your imagination. If you have an older computer it probably has the older USB 2.0 ports, and USB 2.0 supplies a paltry amount of current to devices that are connected to it.

If you like the convenience of charging your phone by plugging it in to your PC, you can easily add several USB 3.0 ports to your existing PC and your phone will charge a lot faster.  [Read more…]

A while back I wrote a post explaining why it makes sense to upgrade your PC to USB 3.0 along with instructions for doing it. In a nutshell, you simply purchase and install an inexpensive USB 3.0 upgrade card.

Posted on April 4, 2016

daily-deal-2Question from Robert C.:  I’ve been shopping for a new computer, and I’ve noticed something that’s puzzling me.

Virtually all of the desktop and laptop PCs currently on the market still have USB 2.0 ports on them, and that includes the newest models.

I guess I had just assumed that by now all new computers would come with USB 3.0 exclusively.

My question is why are the computer manufacturer’s still including USB 2.0 ports on their latest models?

Q&A: Why is my USB external hard drive not working with my new USB 3.0 card?

Question from Derick T.:  Hi Rick. I had been wanting to add some USB 3.0 ports to my HP desktop PC for a while now. I finally broke down and bought a USB 3.0 expansion card (#ad) and installed it.

The new USB ports work fine with my USB mouse, keyboard and printer, but when I plug my Seagate external USB hard drive into it I can’t get the computer to recognize the drive. I know it should work because the box the drive came in said it works with USB 3.0. Am I doing something wrong?
