Apple apologizes for intentionally bricking customers’ iPhones (and releases a fix)

Posted on February 23, 2016

iphone-6-plusA couple of weeks ago I wrote a post explaining how you could brick your iPhone 6 by having it repaired by anyone other than Apple’s own techs.

To recap, Apple recently released an update to iOS that caused any iPhone 6 that was repaired by a third-party repair shop to freeze up and display a permanent “Error 53” the next time it was booted up.

Apple’s response to the thousands of customers who asked the company to fix the error was, in effect, “Sorry, but you’ll have to buy a new phone”.  [Read more…]

Q&A: Why does the touch screen on my iPhone 6 Plus stop working at random times?

Posted on December 18, 2015

iphone-6-plusQuestion from Gracie:  The touch screen on my iPhone 6 Plus has started freezing up on me at random times.

There doesn’t seem to be any kind of pattern as to when the issue arises. The screen just stops responding to taps and swipes on occasion. It will usually start working again after a few minutes if I just leave it alone and don’t touch it.

This is really irritating because I can’t even answer a call if it comes in when the screen is froze. Can you tell me how to fix it?

How to add extensions to numbers in your smart phone’s address book

Posted on November 1, 2015

iphoneDo you make frequent calls to someone at a business where you have to enter an extension number in order to reach that person? If so, you can easily append the extension right to the end of the number so you won’t have to enter it every time you call.

I’ll explain how to do that, but first we need to discuss two common ways that switchboards handle calls to extensions:

1 – Most switchboards will answer your call and give you a list of menu options. If you know the extension number of the person you wish to speak with, you can dial it at any time without waiting for the message/menu to finish “talking”.

2 – Other switchboards require you to listen to the entire recorded message/menu before entering the extension number.

With that preliminary discussion out of the way, here’s how to append an extension number directly to the end of a telephone number on your smart phone:  [Read more…]

iPhone users: Turn off ‘Wi-Fi Assist’ NOW to avoid paying a HUGE cellular phone bill!

Posted on September 28, 2015

ios-9-logoIf you’re one of the millions of iPhone owners who have already installed iOS 9, chances are you are pretty happy with it. But there’s something you might not be aware of…

If you tend to use Wi-Fi a lot because you have a limited data plan, you could be in for a major shock when your next cellular phone bill arrives.

By default, a new iOS 9 feature called “Wi-Fi Assist” automatically switches your phone from Wi-Fi to your carrier’s 4G network whenever it detects a weak Wi-Fi signal.  [Read more…]

Posted on July 2, 2015

apple-logoIt seems like hackers and scammers are attacking Apple devices more and more every day.

That’s why it’s wise to always ensure that your iPhones, iPads and Macs are always running the latest versions of their respective operating systems and that all security updates are installed as soon as possible after they are released.

Apple has just released important security updates for iOS and OS X to plug dozens of security holes in the two operating systems. If you own an iPhone, iPad or Mac you should install the updates ASAP to prevent hackers from compromising your device(s).
