Q&A: How can I mark my place so I can come back later to read more of your articles?

Posted on December 28, 2023

Question from Diane:  Hi, Rick. Maybe it’s just me, but as a fairly new subscriber, I have been going through all your tip pages, one by one.

Of course, there’s no way to read all 700+ plus pages in one sitting since there are 6 posts on each page, so I’ve been going through a few a day.

The thing is, it’s really hard to pick up where I left off on a certain page after constantly clicking “Next Page”.

If there’s a fairly simple way for you to add a feature to go to a specific page…. for other OCD’s / newbies like me, it would really be appreciated. Or, then again, maybe I am missing an easier way to do it?  [Read more…]

Q&A: What’s the difference between Public and Private IP Addresses?

Posted on December 5, 2023

Question from Bill: I was reading the manual that came with my new IP camera and it referred to both public IP addresses and private IP addresses.

I got the camera working just fine but now I’m curious about the difference between public and private IP addresses.

Can you clear it up for me?

Q&A: Will I need a new modem if I upgrade to faster Internet?

Posted on November 8, 2023

Question from Rod:  I received a flyer in the mail from Xfinity saying everyone in my area now has the option to upgrade our Internet service to 1200Mbps with virtually no increase in the monthly charges.

I’d love to do that because that would be a huge increase from the 200Mbps I’m getting now, but I can’t afford to buy a new modem.

I bought the modem I have now four years ago and it’s still working great.

My question is will I need to buy a new modem in order to get the full 1200Mbps speed that comes with this new plan?  [Read more…]

How to quickly find a word or phrase on a web page

The amount of information available on the Internet with just a few clicks of the mouse boggles the mind.

If all that info was published in a single book it would probably be thick enough to reach all the way to the moon.

That’s why Google and other Internet search engines are so important for helping us find the info we need in a timely manner.

But a single web page can hold a lot of information as well, and if you need to find something on a large, congested page it can be like finding a needle in a haystack.  [Read more…]

Rick’s Tech Tips Newsletter

Question from Linda:  I hate it when a website I’m visiting pops up a little box asking me to let them know my location.

I always click “Don’t allow” every time I get that message, but I’d really like to stop receiving them in the first place.

Can you tell me what I need to do to stop websites from even asking for my location?  [Read more…]
