WikiCancel.org – Detailed instructions for closing hundreds of online accounts

Posted on September 19, 2015

wikicancel-logoThe Internet makes it possible to use thousands of wonderful online services and access enough information to fill warehouses full of encyclopedias on virtually every subject known to man.

Many of these resources only become available to you after signing up for an online account, but what happens when you no longer need or want to use a service or access the information provided by a specific website?

Closing an online account should take no more than two or three clicks of the mouse, and it usually is really that simple. The trick however is finding the place on the website where you need to begin the clicking.  [Read more…]

StartPage – Search the web without being tracked

Posted on January 12, 2015

Google is by far the most used search engine on the web, but it’s far from the only one. In fact, there are many excellent search engines out there.

If you value your privacy, I suggest giving StartPage by ixquick a try.

Unlike Google and the other popular search engines, StartPage doesn’t track your searches in any way.

No storing cookies, no retaining your search history in a database. They don’t log your IP address or use any other  tracking method whatsoever.

In a nutshell, once you’ve completed your search with StartPage and clicked on your chosen result, your search session is over and StartPage doesn’t even “remember” that you were ever there.

Why not visit StartPage right now and give it a try?

Bonus tip: Google has removed the “View Image” button from their image search results, but StartPage still has it on theirs!

Make new browser tabs open immediately instead of in the background

Posted on December 23, 2014

new-browser-tabsThe ability to open a web page in a new browser tab instead of a new window is one of computing’s most popular upgrades of all time.

But there is one annoyance with tabbed browsing that really gets on my nerves, and that’s how new tabs open in the background instead of opening out in front where you can see them without having to first click on the new tab.

Getting Internet Explorer and Firefox to open new tabs immediately is simply a matter of changing a setting.  [Read more…]

Q&A: What’s the fastest web browser for a slow Internet connection

Posted on December 5, 2014

opera-logoQuestion from Camille I.:  I have cable Internet through Charter and it’s usually pretty fast, but during the evenings it sometimes slows to a crawl. I read somewhere a while back that some web browsers work better on slow Internet connections than others. Can you recommend one?

Rick’s answer:  I sure can Camille. For overall speed it’s hard to beat Google Chrome, but if you have a slow Internet connection Opera running in turbo mode is amazing! What makes Opera so much faster over a slow connection than other browsers is their data proprietary compression system.  [Read more…]

Q&A: What’s the difference between a Public IP Address and a Private IP Address? And how do I find out what mine are?

Posted on October 16, 2014

ip-address-logoQuestion from Keegan L.  I read an article on Internet security last night and they kept talking about a computer’s “Public IP Address” and its “Private IP Address”. I never could figure out exactly what those terms mean.

Can you tell me the difference between the two types of IP addresses? And how do I find out what those IP addresses are on my computer?

Rick’s answer:   [Read more…]
