Every industry has a certain amount of jargon that only people involved with that industry understand, but the computer world has way more than its fair share of it.

I’ve been using computers since the early 1980s and I still encounter technical terms and phrases on on occasion that I have never heard before.

Luckily, there is a fantastic website called Webopedia that we can turn to whenever we need to find out what a new computer term means or how a certain tidbit of technology works.

Q&A: Why won’t my PC boot from a hard drive from another PC?

Question from Travis:  I have an HP desktop computer that got fried by lightning.

I also have an old Dell desktop that had a bad hard drive. Both PCs ran Windows 10.

My cousin connected the hard drive from the HP to his computer and it seemed to work fine, so I replaced the bad hard drive in my Dell with the one from the dead HP.

But now after switching the drives, when I turn the computer on Windows won’t boot up. All it does is display a blue screen with an error message on it.

Question from Alvin:  I recently retired after working for the same construction company for 43 years.

Now I’d like to take up something new to occupy all this free time that I suddenly have to fill.

I’ve always wanted to learn about computers so I’ve started reading a few tech blogs, and RicksDailyTips is one of them (thanks to my brother Keith for recommending it).

I’m not tech savvy by any stretch (I hope to change that eventually) but I do believe I’m progressing ok for an older dude who still uses a flip phone.

There’s a term that keeps popping up in the articles I read that I just can’t seem to get my head around. Can you tell me what the word “bottleneck” means in regards to computers?  [Read more…]
