Today’s quick tech tip….

Q&A: Do some VPNs cause you to get SPAM emails?

Question from Rita:  My brother sent me a link to a new VPN app and told me I should try it.

I installed it last night and when I woke up this morning my phone had hundreds of SPAM messages when I checked my email.

Is it common for some VPN’s to cause you to start getting SPAM or is something else going on?

Rick’s answer:  Rita, a legitimate VPN won’t cause an increase in SPAM messages at all. In fact, it will help protect you from them.

I could be wrong, but I’m fairly certain that the message you received wasn’t actually sent by your brother. I believe a hacker actually sent you a malicious link in your brother’s name.

You didn’t mention which messaging service was used to send the message you received so there’s no way to know for sure, but it sure sounds like your brother’s messaging account was either hacked, cloned or had a malicious app enabled on it.

Another possibility is your brother simply sent you a link that he received from someone else.

Either way, you need to uninstall that new app immediately. Hopefully that will put a stop to the SPAM emails but I’m afraid there are no guarantees.

If uninstalling the app doesn’t put a stop to the SPAM you can try resetting your phone back to its factory defaults in order to wipe out any residual malware, but even that won’t help much if your email address has already been added to one or more SPAM email lists (and it probably has).

I wish I had better news for you Rita, but I just don’t in this situation.
