6 of my favorite websites and blogs: How many of them do you read?

Posted on April 5, 2018

internetAs you well know, the Internet is a massive repository of information on virtually any topic you can think of.

In a nutshell, whatever it might be that interests you, you’re sure to find plenty of websites and blogs that cover it in various levels of detail.

Like you, I have a short list of favorite places on the web that I visit regularly for the latest news, information and tips on the topics that interest me the most.

I thought you might be interested in some of them, so I have listed my top six favorites below (and surprise – not all of them are tech related):  [Read more…]

Review: Corsair Flash Voyager Slider X1 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive

With USB Flash Drives getting bigger and faster all the time, USB 3.0 flash drives in the 16GB-64GB range are quite common now, and inexpensive as well.

Although you can purchase flash drives that rival the storage space of a small hard drive these days, the sweet spot in price vs. capacity and performance seems to be with 128GB models.

I recently received a Corsair Flash Voyager Slider X1 128GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (#ad) for review, and as with most Corsair products I was quite impressed with it overall.

Heads-Up: Your PC will have to have Windows 10 if you want to run Microsoft Office 2019

Posted on February 2, 2018

According to a new blog post from Microsoft the upcoming release of MS Office 2019 won’t be available for computers running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

In a nutshell, if you want to use Office 2019 and your computer isn’t running Windows 10 you’ll either have to upgrade your PC to Windows 10 or buy a new computer that already has it pre-installed.

You can read the details for yourself at the link in the first paragraph, but here’s the relevant info:  [Read more…]

Parted Magic – An awesome bootable CD for testing, partitioning and cloning hard drives

Posted on August 25, 2017

parted-magic-logoYour computer’s hard drive or SSD is one of the most important parts of it.

After all, it stores all of your valuable programs, data files, music and other miscellaneous pieces of your digital life in addition to the operating system itself.

Parted Magic is a powerful suite of Linux-based utilities for testing, partitioning, formatting and cloning your hard drive(s) and/or SSD(s).

Many computer techs (including Yours Truly) use it fairly often for setting up and maintaining the drives in our own machines as well as those of our customers.  [Read more…]

Q&A: Would you recommend setting up my own web server?

Posted on May 13, 2017

dreamhost-logoQuestion from Paul:  I have three blogs (each in a different niche) that currently receive anywhere from 4,000 to 20,000 visitors per month. The two largest blogs have started loading really slow.

All three blogs have been hosted with Godaddy for about four years now. I know it’s time to move them to a dedicated server but the cheapest plan I can find is way out of my budget.

My question is do you think it would be a good idea to move them onto my own server? I have a spare Gateway DX4860-UB32P with 8Gigs of RAM that I can install Red Hat Linux and Apache on. I also have a 60 Mbps Internet connection with Charter.

Do you think this would be a good setup to replace my Godaddy hosting? I make a couple of hundred bucks from my blogs each month but I’d like to eventually make it full time and quit my job so I don’t want to make a big mistake.
