7 tips for safely sharing your computer with guests during the holiday season

Posted on November 11, 2019

welcome-christmasAre you expecting to have guests staying at your home at any time during the holiday season?

If so, it’s possible that one or more of them might ask to borrow your computer to check their email, get on Facebook, or do whatever it is they enjoy doing online.

There’s really nothing wrong with allowing a visitor to use your computer, but there are a few things you might want to do before your guests arrive:  [Read more…]

When is the best time of the day for posting a tweet on Twitter?

Posted on October 29, 2019

twitter-logoIf you could only post one tweet per day, when would be the best time to do it?

I’ve seen this question asked over and over on various social media forums, and as you might expect there sees to be no uniform answer.

Some people prefer to tweet in mid-morning, others at night. In other words, this isn’t a good question to ask in a forum if you want an accurate answer.

Well, thanks to a fairly comprehensive body of research, we don’t really have to guess about when is the best time to post a single daily tweet.  [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I hide the retweets from someone I follow on Twitter but keep receiving their own tweets?

Posted on October 11, 2019

Question from Melanie W.:  I have a question about Twitter that I hope you can answer for me.

I’m following a woman who’s a news anchor on my local TV station.

I really love her tweets because they’re always interesting and informative, but she retweets like crazy and most of the things she retweets don’t interest me at all.

I know I could unfollow her but then I wouldn’t be able to see the tweets she posts.

Is there a way to keep following this person and see the tweets she posts herself but not see any of her retweets?

Q&A: Why did my blog start showing the old versions of posts I’ve updated after installing CloudFlare?

Posted on September 30, 2019

Question from Elise:  I’m hoping you can help me fix a problem I’m having with my WordPress blog.

My blog pages started loading real slowly a few weeks ago and I read somewhere online that installing CloudFlare on it would speed it up.

Well, I installed CloudFlare and sure enough the pages immediately started loading a LOT faster. Needless to say, I was delighted!

But then I noticed a problem. Whenever I update a post it shows the updated version when I view it on my computer, but it shows the old version (the way it was before I updated it) when I view it on my phone.

I called several friends of mine and asked them if they were seeing the new versions of the posts (I told them what the changes were so they’d know what to look for). Every one of them are seeing the old versions of my updated posts.

I’m the only person that’s seeing the updates, and that’s only when I’m looking at the posts on my computer. I still see the older versions when I use my phone.

Why is this happening, and how can I fix it?

Scam alert: Infections of ‘Password Stealing Malware’ are up 60% so far in 2019!

Posted on July 25, 2019

Security firm Kaspersky (the makers of Kaspersky Antivirus products) has just reported that the number of computers infected with Password Stealing Malware was up 60% during the first half 2019.

The vast majority of those infections involve Azorult, an extremely dangerous trojan-type virus that hackers use to steal a wide variety of user files and personal data (including passwords).

Kaspersky also reported that scans with Kaspersky Antivirus found Password Stealing Malware infections on 25% of all computers that are running the software.
