Review: HP 15-ay011nr 15.6″ Full-HD Laptop

Posted on October 24, 2017

hp-15-ay011nr-laptopMid-range laptops keep getting better while prices are lower than ever, and that’s a great thing for consumers.

I recently had the opportunity to check out the HP 15-ay011nr 15.6″ Full-HD Laptop, a powerful new mid-range machine that offers plenty of bang for the computing buck.

The heart of this laptop is its powerful Intel Core i5 6200U, 2.3GHz, Dual-Core CPU and 8GB of RAM. This is a potent combination that makes Windows 10 really fly, and I found this to be one of the fastest sub-$500 laptops that I’ve used to date.  [Read more…]

How to reclaim up to 40GB of wasted storage space after installing the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Posted on October 24, 2017

If you’ve already installed the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update on your PC you might be wondering where a huge chunk of your free hard drive/SSD storage space went.

Well, when Windows Update installs a new major Windows release it automatically backs up the previous Windows installation just in case you need to revert back to it for some reason.

That’s a good thing because it provides a way to roll your system back to the previous version of Windows in case something goes wrong with the update.

But there’s a problem: It can take as much as 40GB of storage space to hold the files in that previous Windows version backup. That means dozens of Gigabytes of “wasted” space won’t be available for storing photos, Office documents and/or other important user-created files.

Of course if your system has a massive hard drive with tons of unused space available, you probably won’t even miss that “wasted” disk space.

But what if your hard drive was already close to being maxed out before the upgrade? Or maybe your PC has a relatively small solid state drive (SSD) (#ad) instead of a much larger hard drive?

If you find yourself running low on storage space after installing the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, you can easily recover dozens of Gigabytes of space by removing those old Windows backup files. Just follow the steps below:  [Read more…]

How to download videos from Facebook to your PC without using a third party extension

Posted on October 17, 2017

Facebook makes it easy to upload and share videos with your friends, but downloading videos from Facebook to your computer has always been a challenge.

There are a number of browser extensions and third-party add-ons that claim to assist you with downloading Facebook videos, but many of them are actually malware. That’s why I never recommend any of them.

As luck would have it, there’s a way to download videos from Facebook to your computer without having to install anything at all.  [Read more…]

Scam alert: Newly-discovered security flaw makes every Wi-Fi device you own vulnerable to hackers

Posted on October 17, 2017

Well, it’s a new day, and yet another serious security issue has arisen. And this one affects literally every device you own that communicates over Wi-Fi.

CyberSecurity Researchers have discovered a critical flaw in the WPA2 security protocol that can allow hackers to eavesdrop on (and even hijack) your Wi-Fi communications, regardless of how securely your devices and network are locked down.

This vulnerability is present in every Wi-Fi enabled router, computer, smart phone, tablet, smart watch…well, you get the picture. If it communicates over Wi-Fi, its connection can be hacked!  [Read more…]

Q&A: Can I use my HughesNet satellite Internet modem in two places?

Posted on October 16, 2017

Question from Carl F.:  I live in rural Georgia but I also own a second home (a cabin) in the Missouri Ozarks. Both homes have a HughesNet satellite antenna installed.

I spend most of my time in Georgia but I head to the Ozarks for a couple of weeks several times a year.

My question is can I just take my HughesNet modem with me when I go to Missouri and plug it into that dish?

My cabin is in a pretty isolated area and satellite Internet is the only viable broadband option I have out there. There isn’t even a cellular signal available or I’d just get myself a hotspot box.

Anyway, it seems to me I should be able to just plug the modem into either satellite dish and have it work. Or am I missing something?

I’d just take the modem with me next time and give it a try but I’m afraid it might mess something up.
