Why websites that block readers who use ad blockers are shooting themselves in the foot

Posted on August 14, 2018

If your web browser has an ad blocker enabled you’ve probably noticed that many websites you want to visit now won’t let you view their content unless you disable the ad blocker.

The reason they’ve adopted this policy? Because they depend on advertising revenue to fund their operations and earn a profit on their investments.

Ad blockers prevent advertisements from showing up in your web browser, and that results in zero ad revenue being earned from the page view.

Therefore, it seems like blocking visitors who use ad blockers would be a wise move, right?

Well, it really isn’t. Read on and I’ll explain why.  [Read more…]

Greenshot – My favorite screenshot utility

Posted on August 12, 2018

greenshot-logoMost Windows users know that pressing the Print Screen key will create an exact image of everything on the current screen and place it on the Windows clipboard, thereby creating a “screenshot” image.

I’ve tried several third-part screenshot utilities over the years, but my favorite by far is a nifty little free program called Greenshot. In fact, I think it’s the best thing since that $50 bill that I found laying on the riverbank back when I was a kid!

Here’s why Facebook keeps switching your Newsfeed from ‘Most Recent’ to ‘Top Stories’

Posted on August 10, 2018

It’s been a good while now since Facebook rolled out the “Top Stories” method of displaying posts in our Newsfeeds.

Well, everything that I have seen and read about it clearly indicate that the vast majority of users absolutely hate it.

I receive at least three or four messages every week asking me how to prevent Facebook from randomly switching the Newsfeed from “Most Recent” to “Top Stories”, and every time I have to give the same answer: “You can’t”.

Truth be told, you actually can do it with the help of a third-party browser add-on called Social Fixer, but that shouldn’t be required in my opinion.

You really should be able to disable auto-switching to “Top Stories” in the Facebook settings without having to install another piece of software on your computer, but that simply isn’t possible right now.  [Read more…]

Are you frustrated by the lack of storage space on the typical external USB hard drive? Do you long for an external drive that’s super-fast, yet plugs into a standard USB 3.0 port?

Well look no further, because Seagate has both bases well-covered with their new Seagate Backup Plus 4TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive. (#ad)

Most consumer-grade USB hard drives currently max out at around 2TB, but this Seagate Backup Plus doubles that to a massive 4TB.

Of course to take full advantage of all that storage space, the drive needs to transfer data at the fastest speeds possible – and this awesome drive is lightning fast!  [Read more…]

Q&A: If I delete a message I sent to someone on Facebook Messenger will they still see it?

Posted on August 9, 2018

Question from Anthony:  If I send a message to someone on Facebook Messenger but then immediately change my mind and delete it, will the other person still see it?

I got mad at my girlfriend and sent her a really mean message. I’m afraid if she sees it she’ll break up with me.

I deleted the message less than 30 seconds after I sent it.
