Q&A: Why did you stop answering questions on Quora?

Posted on July 9, 2019

Question from Brad:  Hi Rick. I have a question for you and I hope you won’t mind answering it.

I’m a huge fan of Quora and I really enjoyed reading your answers to tech questions on there. In fact, that’s how I found your blog.

I noticed that you stopped answering questions over there a few months ago and I was wondering why? You’ve help so many people with your Quora answers.

Q&A: How can I find out the exact date when a computer was purchased?

Posted on July 7, 2019

microsoft-windowsQuestion from Kenneth L.:  My friend and I have had the exact same HP laptop for over 4 years.

He insists that he bought his laptop several months before I bought mine, but I’m certain that I bought mine first.

Is there any way to tell which computer was bought first? We have a sizable bet riding on the outcome.

Thanks!

How to customize the Windows 10 Start Menu

Posted on July 4, 2019

Windows-10-logoIf you have a PC with Windows 10 on it, you know that Microsoft heard all of our complaints about removing the Start Menu from Windows 8.

Thankfully, they added the Start Menu back in Windows 8.1 and then they actually enhanced it in Windows 10.

I really like the new Windows 10 Start Menu because it gives you all the power and functionality of the classic Windows 7 style Start Menu plus a few of the best features of the Windows 8 Start Screen.

One of the things I like most is the amazing flexibility you have in customizing the Start Menu to your own tastes and preferences.

Q&A: Why won’t Fiverr let me use the money in my account to pay for a gig?

Posted on July 3, 2019

fiverr-logoQuestion from Lee W.:  I recently completed a gig that a buyer had purchased from me on Fiverr.

That left me with $4 in my Fiverr account (and the $4 has cleared, making it available for use).

I tried to use that $4 as partial payment for a gig that I want to order but the order page takes me directly to PayPal where it tries to collect the entire $5 without using the $4 that’s in my Fiverr account.

I know that I’ve used my Fiverr account balance to pay for gigs before, but it won’t let me do it now. Why not?

Turn your old unused smartphone into a free ‘landline’ with Viber

Posted on July 2, 2019

viberIf you’re like most people these days, you probably have a perfectly good smart phone sitting in a drawer collecting dust after falling victim to the endless cell phone upgrade cycle.

That unused phone has some pretty sophisticated electronics inside it, so why not put it to good use?

You can turn your “old” smart phone into a landline replacement by installing a wonderful free app called Viber.

And regardless of which brand and model of phone you have, there is probably a version of Viber to run on it! [Read more…]
