How to disable ‘Face Recognition’ on Facebook (and why you might want to)

Posted on October 12, 2021

Facebook now has a feature called Face Recognition, and some folks aren’t all that fond of it due to the privacy implications.

In a nutshell, Facebook’s new Face Recognition feature works something like this:

When another user uploads a new photo or video to his/her account Facebook will compare it to YOUR profile picture and any photos you’re tagged in to see if you’re in that new photo.

If Facebook’s scan determines that your face is indeed included in that photo or video you’ll be sent a notification that someone has posted a picture/video that has you in it. [Read more…]

Q&A: Will I have to buy a new copy of Windows if I replace my motherboard?

Posted on October 11, 2021

Question from Paul:  I have a custom built gaming PC that I bought in January 2014. It came with Windows 8.1 on it.

I then updated the machine to Windows 10 while Microsoft was allowing the upgrade for free.

Now I’d like to upgrade the machine itself by installing a new, more powerful motherboard.

My question is will I be able to reinstall Windows 10 and have it activate after replacing the motherboard?  [Read more…]

Q&A: Is this person lying about posting affiliate links in my Facebook group?

Posted on October 8, 2021

Question from Jill:  Hi Rick, I’ve just joined your Rick’s Tech Tips Facebook group and already have learned so much!

I have a Facebook question. I don’t know if it is within your scope, but here goes.

I’m an admin on a group and from time to time one of the members posts links for things like Psychic Reading pages and similar things.

These links appear to be affiliate links and I think the person posting them receives some type of payment.

However there is a message going round that these posts are not in fact coming from that person but are somehow being sent by a third party purporting to be the member. And that’s what the person posting the links is claiming too.

If she is indeed posting these links I plan to remove her and block her from the group.

So my question is, is it possible that she’s telling the truth or is this just an excuse she’s using after having been caught?  [Read more…]

Did you know the Windows Clipboard can store multiple items?

Posted on October 7, 2021

One of the biggest frustrations for Windows users has always been how the Clipboard will only store the last item that was “Copied” or “Cut”.

In other words, when you copy or cut an item to the Clipboard, the data that was previously stored in the Clipboard was over-written by the newly-copied or cut data.

There are several great third-party Clipboard tools that will force the Clipboard to store multiple items, and some of them are quite good.

However, Windows 10 and Windows 11 have a “Clipboard History” tool that allows the Clipboard to store multiple items that can be “pasted” at any time with a simple keystroke combination.
