Q&A: Is cleanmgr.exe a virus?

Posted on January 9, 2023

Question from Melinda:  I have a question about my Acer Windows laptop, Rick.

Yesterday morning I asked a friend on Facebook a computer question and his reply was that I need to run a file called cleanmgr.exe.

I’m a little leery about running .exe files because I remember reading that they can be dangerous.

Here’s my question: Is cleanmgr.exe a virus or is it safe for me to run? And if it’s safe, do you think I should run it?  [Read more…]

Q&A: Can I connect several short Ethernet cables together to make one long one?

Question from Steve:  I could use some advice, Rick. I need a 200ft Ethernet cable to run between my router and a Desktop PC that’s located on the far side of my office building?

Do you think it would be ok to connect eight 25 foot Ethernet cables together with RJ45 couplers? I already have the cables and the couplers are dirt cheap.

Do you think this would work ok? I’d like to save some money if we can, but we really need to have this machine get (and stay) online most of all.

Question from Darryl:  Several years ago I paid a friend of mine to build me a desktop computer.

This machine has an Intel CPU and 8GB of RAM. There is no video card because it’s using the integrated video on the motherboard.

This machine has worked perfectly for years but now it’s started overheating and shutting down on me. The CPU temperature reached 170 degrees before it shut down last time.

What could be causing this?  [Read more…]

Q&A: Why won’t Microsoft Defender turn on after removing McAfee?

Posted on January 2, 2023

Question from Ray:  I know that Microsoft Defender disables itself if it detects a second antivirus is running but that it’s supposed to automatically turn back on if you remove the other antivirus program.

Well I recently uninstalled McAfee expecting Windows Defender to turn back on, but it didn’t. I keep getting a message saying my computer is unprotected.

Why is this happening and how can I fix it? [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I add my name to the metadata on the photos I take?

Posted on December 31, 2022

Question from Linda:  I have a quick photography question for you, Rick. I hope you don’t mind.

I take lots of pictures with my phone and then transfer them to my computer.

When I right-click on a photo and look at the properties (metadata) it always displays the name of my phone but my name is nowhere on there as the photographer.

I’ve seen lots of photos other people have taken that have their name in the metadata as the”Author”.

How can I add my name to the metadata on the photos I take? [Read more…]
