Hello again, and Happy New Year!
Regardless of your perspective on life, I’m sure you will agree that 2016 was quite a year.
As happens every year, several major events took place in 2016. Some of them were good, and some were bad. The category each of them fell into depends entirely on your own perspective.
The pundits and prognosticators of the world will soon be rolling out their predictions for the new year, so I thought I would take this opportunity to give you a few predictions of my own. I hope you don’t mind.
1 – This will be the year when companies and governments get serious about the security of the products and services they provide. They simply have to if they want to stay relevant in our day-to-day lives and avoid the wrath of the marketplace and the voters.
The hackers and scammers of the world seemed to be in full control of the sandbox in 2016, but I believe their threats will be dealt with and mitigated (at least for the most part) in the coming year.
2 – Tiny computers about the size of your smartphone will grab an ever larger portion of the desktop computer market. I already have two PCs that are smaller than a brick set up in my home, both of which are running Windows 10 like champs.
In the tech world, small is in, and I expect that trend to continue and even accelerate throughout 2017. I believe by the time 2018 rolls around many tiny PCs will be at least as powerful as the full-sized, mid-range desktop computers of today.
3 – Hard drives will become virtually obsolete by the end of the new year. We’re about to enter an era of huge, yet relatively inexpensive solid state drives and embedded non-volatile memory that will make spinning hard drives go the way of the floppy disk.
In fact, by the time 2018 rolls around I believe you’ll be hard-pressed to find a new laptop or desktop computer on the sales floor that contains a spinning hard drive.
4 – At least one new technology that isn’t even on our radar yet will burst onto the scene and change some aspect our lives forever. Count on it.
Bottom line: Every new year brings new challenges and new opportunities, and 2017 is sure to follow that trend. Buckle up and prepare for the ride!
