Today’s featured tech tip….

Q&A: How do I disable GPS tracking on my iPhone?

Question from Connie:  I heard that iPhones have GPS tracking enabled by default but you can turn it off. I don’t want it enabled on mine.

I looked through the iPhone Settings but I couldn’t find a GPS setting. How do I disable it?

Rick’s answer:  Connie, the GPS radio in your iPhone is controlled by an umbrella “Location Services” setting. There is no stand-alone GPS on/off “switch” in the settings app.

The reason why there’s an umbrella Location Services setting is because your phone uses other methods of location tracking besides just GPS.

Turning off Location Services disables ALL location tracking methods, not just the GPS radio. That sounds like what you’re really wanting to do anyway, right?

Just follow the steps below to disable all location tracking on your iPhone, including GPS:

Note: The steps required to disable Location Services can vary just a bit depending on the model of iPhone and iOS version being used. Therefore, you should use the instructions below as a general guide.

1 – Tap the “gear” shaped Settings icon.

2 – Scroll down and tap Privacy & Security.

3 – Tap Location Services, then toggle the “Location Services” setting to Off.

4 – Tap the Turn Off link in the box that just popped up.

That’s all there is to it. All Location Services (including GPS) should now be disabled on your iPhone.

You can verify that Location Services is disabled by making sure the slider is now gray instead of green.

If you ever decide to re-enable Location Services just repeat the steps above and toggle the Location Services setting back to On in step #3.

And now, one final note…

Some apps require that Location Services be enabled in order for them to work as intended.

If you ever need to use an app that requires Location Services to be enabled simply repeat the steps listed above to reenable it, then disable Location Services in the settings of the other apps.
