Google Goggles – Get instant information on virtually anything by taking its picture!

Posted on February 1, 2013

google-goggles-logoImagine that you’re walking through your favorite store and an item catches your eye. You pull out your smart phone and take a picture of it and a description pops up with details on the manufacturer, retail pricing and more.

Or perhaps you’re walking through Paris and you come upon an interesting looking building, statue or other landmark. You snap a picture of it with your phone and you’re immediately presented with the details of what you’re looking at.

A bit farther down the street you see a sign written in French (of course), so you photograph it and your phone provides you with the English translation.

Sound like something out of a science fiction movie? Well, it isn’t. This technology is available right now, and it’s absolutely free. Just download a free app called Google Goggles and you’ll be doing just this type of thing in minutes! You can download Google Goggles for free from the Google Play Store.

textPlus – Slash your cell phone bill by texting for free

Posted on January 31, 2013

text-plus If you send thousands of text messages every month but rarely actually talk on the phone, you can use a free app called textPlus to send and receive all the text messages you want for free.

textPlus works great with Andoid phones, iPhones and even iPads and iPod touch devices. This is a great way to downgrade your cell phone plan in order to save money, yet still have the ability to send unlimited texts.

There is one caveat to consider though. Whenever you aren’t connected via Wi-Fi, your text messages will be sent and received via your phone’s data pipe so you’ll need to keep an eye on your data usage. This shouldn’t really be a problem though unless you already max out your data usage each month.

Depending on your phone type, you can download textPlus for free from iTunes or the Google Play Store.

Force your Sprint Android phone to roam with Roam Control

Posted on January 20, 2013

roam-controlIf you’re a Sprint customer with an Android phone it’s a good bet that you sometimes find yourself in places where the Sprint signal is so weak that it’s unusable, yet just strong enough to prevent the phone from roaming, even when there is a strong roaming signal available. And if you’re like me, you don’t like it one bit.

In times past most Sprint phones had a setting that would allow you to force the phone into Roaming-Only mode in situations like the one above, but current models no longer have this feature. Why? Because Sprint doesn’t want to have to pay other carriers for allowing you to use their cell towers. Forcing their customers to remain on the Sprint network unless there is no Sprint signal available whatsoever saves the company a lot of money over the course of a month. [Read more…]

Printing from your Smart Phone or Tablet

Posted on January 19, 2013

smart-phone-printingMany of us use our smart phones or tablets more than our computers these days, and while these gadgets sure are handy, printing from them often isn’t. But there are ways to do it, and most of them involve downloading an app.

Some devices are able to connect directly to a printer via a USB cable using software that came pre-installed on the device. Check your device’s user manual to see if yours is one of them. If not, or if you prefer to print wirelessly, you’ll probably need to download an app written just for that purpose. [Read more…]

WhoAreYou – Visual Caller ID, Call Blocker, and Text Blocker for Android phones

Posted on January 12, 2013

whoareyouDo you hate getting calls from “Unknown Number” or texts from phone numbers you don’t recognize? Do you ever wish you could block a phone number from ever calling or texting you again? Well, you’re in luck if you have an Android based smart phone.

A free App called WhoAreYou puts you in control of who is or isn’t allowed to call or text you, and it lets you know who is calling or texting even if that person isn’t on your contact list. Pretty nifty, huh?

If you receive a call or text from someone you simply don’t want to ever hear from again (i.e. your ex, a telemarketer, etc.) just tap the “Ditch” button and they’ll be history (at least as far as your phone is concerned). [Read more…]
