How (and when) to use a temporary email address

Have you ever been asked to provide your email address in exchange for the privilege of reading an article on a website that you never plan to visit again?

Or perhaps you were required to type in your email address in order to play an online game or enter a contest?

If so, did you start receiving tons of junk mail shortly thereafter? Chances are, the answer is yes.

The Internet is home to tons of interesting and fun things to see and do, but it’s important to remember that very few things on the web are truly free. There’s almost always a hidden cost, and in cases like the ones I mentioned above, oftentimes that cost is having your email address added to a SPAM email list.

That’s why I simply choose not to participate in any online activity that requires me to provide my email address if there is no legitimate reason for the website or service to have it.

However, that being said, I realize that we’re all different and you just might find those types of online activities enjoyable enough to justify taking the chance of entering your email address.

But guess what? There’s a very simple way for you to enjoy your favorite online activities while still protecting the privacy of your all-important email address.

All you have to do is use a temporary (i.e. disposable) email address every time you’re asked to enter one under circumstances like the ones I mentioned above.

Where can you get a disposable email address every time you need one? Well, how about right here?

When you visit that page you’ll immediately be given a temporary email address and a temporary Inbox in which to receive your emails. No sign-up or personal info of any kind is required.

Just be aware that you won’t be able to reply to any of the emails you receive at your temporary email address if you choose to use this particular service, but in most cases you won’t need to. Just entering the temporary address will be enough to gain access to the content or service you’re wanting to use.

Note: Some websites will require you to click a link or button in the email to verify that the email address is real, but that won’t affect your real email address at all.

By the way, there are plenty of other temporary email services available, some of which do allow you to reply to received emails. Just Google the term temporary email address and you’ll be presented with a plethora of options to choose from.
