Today’s featured tech tip….

Is it possible to be truly anonymous on the Internet?

That’s a question that I receive in my Inbox on a regular basis. And the answer I always give is a big NO!

Incognito/private browser windows and VPNs can help hide your identity from the general public, but those tools cannot, and will not hide your identity from government entities.

After all, the government has tracking and tracing tools that most of us could never even conceive of them having. If they want to track you down, they can.

What’s more, we all make mistakes. And all it takes is one little mistake to leave a trail that leads right to your doorstep.

Please don’t take this tip to mean I think you’re up to no good. It isn’t that at all. Most people have the best intentions.

The problem? Innocent people are mistaken for crooks and thieves every day. Many seemingly innocent actions with no mal intent whatsoever can appear to be not so innocent in the eyes of an investigator.

I said all of the above to say this…

Always be mindful of the things you do and the information you share online.

It pays to think like a law enforcement officer or government investigator and be extremely careful about the things you do and participate in online. The Internet is a tangled web at best and it’s awful easy to get caught up in someone else’s mischief through absolutely no fault of your own.

Again, no judgement intended. Just a friendly reminder.
