Enable the F8 key for booting into Safe Mode in Windows 8.1

Posted on April 29, 2013

windows-8-logoWhen Microsoft designed Windows 8/8.1 they optimized the boot process in order to make Windows load faster.

While this was a welcome change from previous Windows versions, the faster boot time made it impossible to use the F8 key to load the Boot Menu for booting into Safe Mode.

If you prefer the convenience of being able to boot into Safe Mode in Windows 8 by pressing the F8 key at startup over the faster boot process, you can re-enable the F8 key and have it work just like it always has. Here’s how:  [Read more…]

Microsoft seems to be considering big changes for Windows 8

Posted on April 17, 2013

windows-8-logoHas Microsoft finally learned the value of listening to their customers? It appears that they just might have. Losing sales and market share by the boatloads will usually spur some soul-searching.

Reports leaking out of Redmond indicate that Windows 8.1 (aka Windows Blue) just might have a Start Button/Start Menu as well as an option for booting directly to the Desktop instead of the highly unpopular Start Screen. I for one hope the leaked information is true.

Many great companies have made major blunders (Is anyone reading this old enough to remember the “New Coke”?), but the smart ones eat a bit of crow and reverse course. It appears that the powers that be at Microsoft just might have a clue after all.

What do you think? Will they add these much-in-demand features back to Windows 8.1? Should they? I’d love to hear your opinions.

Q&A: How do I make the Windows 8 Maps app display distances in kilometers?

Posted on April 15, 2013

win8-maps-app-logoQuestion from Joyce B.:   Hi Rick. I just moved from Des Moines, Iowa to Vancouver, British Columbia and of course I brought my new laptop with me.

I love the Windows 8 Maps app, but now that I’m living in Canada I need for it to display distances in kilometers instead of miles. How do I make it do that? Thanks.

Rick‘s answer:  Hi Joyce! I hope you enjoy your new home north of the border. I have a feeling that you will since Canada is such a beautiful country and the people are sooooo nice!

Q&A: How can I uninstall Internet Explorer 10 from Windows 8

Posted on March 30, 2013

windows-8-logoQuestion from Tina F.:  Rick, I recently bought a new laptop for my 12 year old son and it came with Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10.

I won’t go into the reason why, but I would really like to uninstall I.E. from the computer in order to force him to use either Firefox or Chrome. The problem is I can’t seem to find Internet Explorer listed on the Remove Programs list in the Control Panel. How do I delete it?

Microsoft tries discounting Windows 8 in order to boost sluggish sales

Posted on March 13, 2013

windows-8-logoMicrosoft released Windows 8 in October with high hopes of enticing users to either upgrade their older versions of Windows to Windows 8 or simply buy a new Windows 8 based PC outright, but that has turned out to be a pipe dream.

Most consumers and businesses seem intent on skipping the upgrade this time around thanks to several major blunders Microsoft made while planning and designing Windows 8.

First of all, people are pretty happy with their current Windows version. Both Windows XP and Windows 7 are quite stable as Windows goes and the computer hardware they run on are more than capable of running the current generation of software. In short, there is simply no pressing need for most of us to upgrade right now.  [Read more…]
