Beware the insidious Gameover Zeus virus. Find out instantly if your PC is infected.

Posted on September 24, 2014

malwareIt seems like a new virus or trojan pops up every day, and they tend to get nastier as time goes on. The latest super-threat is the insidious Gameover Zeus virus.

Gameover Zeus is a particularly nasty form of malware. In addition to allowing other viruses (including the equally insidious CryptoLocker) to break into your system, it harvests every scrap of financial information it can find from your computer’s hard drive.

Approximately a quarter of a million people and institutions have fallen victim already, and the combined financial losses are staggering – and growing.  [Read more…]

Q&A: Why is Windows 7 not shutting down correctly?

Posted on September 2, 2014

windows-7Question from Enid H.:  I have an Alienware laptop running Windows 7 Pro – 64 bit.

If I start the computer up and run it for just a few minutes it’ll shut down and power off just fine. But if I let it run for an hour or more it won’t shut down. It just stays on the Shutdown screen forever until you unplug the power cord.

Do you have any idea what’s wrong and how I can get my laptop to shut down correctly?

Q&A: Why can’t Internet Explorer load websites after viruses were removed?

Posted on July 29, 2014

ieQuestion from Annika T.:  During the last virus scan Norton found a couple of viruses and removed them. Now Internet Explorer won’t load any websites. All I get is a blank screen and a message saying the site might be down or something.

I know it’s not my Internet connection because Firefox still loads pages just fine. I really need to get IE back working again because I use it and Firefox together to use two Gmail accounts at the same time. Can you help me?

If it matters, my computer is running Windows 7 and Internet Explorer 11.

In fact, Java alone is so insecure that I completely uninstalled it from my PCs a long time ago, and I recommend that you do the same.  [Read more…]

Android users beware: SimpleLocker malware ecrypts the files on your Android device and holds them for ransom

Posted on June 10, 2014

android-logoA while back I wrote about the nasty CryptoLocker ransomeware that was encrypts the hard drives on PCs. Hackers then demand a ransom in exchange for decrypting the locked files. Not a good thing!

Now, a similar piece of ransomeware is attacking Android devices. It’s called SimpleLocker, and it does basically the same thing as CrytoLocker.

So far there have been no reports of SimpleLocker attacking devices in the United States, but it’s only a matter of time before it hits our shores as well.  [Read more…]
