Question from Mike:  I have cable Internet through Xfinity and I pay $14 a month to rent a cable modem from them.

While shopping for a router on Amazon I noticed that they also sell cable modems.

Would you recommend buying my own cable modem since the $168 I pay Xfinity every year for a rental would actually buy one outright?  [Read more…]

How to check the actual speed of your Internet connection

Is your Internet connection really as fast as your ISP claims it is?

In reality, the answer should be yes (or at least fairly close).

Since there are many factors that affect the average speed of a typical high speed Internet connection, it’s unlikely that your actual upload and download speeds to will match your plan’s advertised speeds exactly.

You tend to get the most accurate results from satellite internet providers as there’s less of a bandwidth issue there, but normal fiber and general broadband ISPs can never give you a guaranteed set speed as so many people use their services at once.

But that being said, there shouldn’t be a whole lot of daylight between the two.

A fantastic website called SpeedTest.net will put your Internet connection through its paces and calculate your true data transfer speeds in both directions.

These calculations are based up on real-world tests in which sample data files are first downloaded from a distant server and then uploaded back.

Running the speed test on your own Internet connection is easy. All you have to do is head over to www.speedtest.net and click the big Go button.

When the test is complete you’ll see the results right on the screen. If you want, you can then click the Go button again to run a second follow-up test.

I actually recommend running several tests while connected to different servers (you’ll see a “Change server” option on the screen).

Why? Because some connections are better than others and some remote servers are faster (and closer) than others).

Important: In order to get accurate results from the speed test you’ll need to make sure that the computer or mobile device you’re using to conduct the test is the only device that’s actively using your Internet connection.

If other devices are using the Internet while the test is in progress it will alter the results.

Note: You don’t have to physically disconnect your other devices from your router. You can either temporarily turn them off or put them in Airplane Mode.

If possible, try running several different speed tests using both WiFi and wired Ethernet connections.

Depending on the actual networking adapter(s) installed on the device, either the wired Ethernet connection or the WiFi connection will likely be a lot faster than the other.

That’s all there is to running the tests. If the speeds returned are considerably lower than the speed you’re paying for you should contact your ISP’s Technical Support and ask them to troubleshoot and fix the issue.

Bonus tip: If it turns out that an older, out-of-date router is the culprit you’ll find plenty of new ones to choose from right here. (#ad)

Verizon boosts upload speeds for FiOS customers to match their download speeds

Posted on August 4, 2014

verizon-fios-logoIt has always been a sad fact of life that your broadband Internet upload speeds were a lot slower the speed at which you could download Internet content such as web pages, emails, photos, videos and such.

But if you have a Verizon FiOS fiber Internet connection, you can now kiss that annoyance goodbye.

Effective immediately, all new and existing FiOS customers will be able to upload data to the web just as fast as they can download it. This is a major development if you back up your computer’s data to the cloud, play interactive online games, or do just about anything else that requires the uploading of tons of data.  [Read more…]

Comcast announces the first 12 regions that will be subject to a data cap

Posted on June 18, 2014

comcast-xfinity-logoLast month Comcast announced that they plan to place a monthly cap on users’ Internet data usage, then charge their customers an extra fee if they exceed it. They also announced that the data cap will be rolled out across the country over time.

Well, the company has just released a list of the unlucky regions that will be subjected to the cap first, and here it is:  [Read more…]

Comcast to start capping Internet bandwidth usage

Posted on May 16, 2014

comcast-xfinity-logoIf you get your high speed Internet service via Comcast (aka Xfinity), your wonderful unlimited monthly bandwidth allotment will be coming to an end.

How soon Comcast will begin capping your monthly data usage depends on where you live, and that time-frame ranges all the way from “soon” to “any time within the next five years“.  [Read more…]

Aceup Energy 1200 Watt Portable Inverter Generator

Generators sure come in handy when the power goes out for an extended period of time, but most of them are quite noisy. This one isn’t.

My next-door neighbor used one of these during our recent ice storm outage and I couldn’t even hear it running unless I happened to be outside.
