Q&A: How can I prevent my water pump from destroying my electronic devices?

Posted on February 26, 2018

whole-house-surge-suppressorQuestion from Anita K.:  About 2 years ago I bought an old farmhouse that’s located way out in the country.

I love living here, but I have a serious problem that I hope you can help me find a solution for.

I get my water from a well, and every time the pump turns on my lights dim and other strange things happen.

I don’t know why but it’s causing my light bulbs to blow on a regular basis. I’ve also lost three TVs (all used if that makes a difference), several phone chargers, a wireless router and two computers.

Needless to say, I need to get this fixed as soon as possible. I called an electrician and they want $85 just to come out and check it.

I’m hoping you can tell me what I need to do. What do you think is causing it, and how can I fix it?

Q&A: How’s the best way to keep my iPhone charged up during a 3 day camping trip?

Posted on August 27, 2015

campingQuestion from Eileen J.:  Hi Rick. My husband and I are planning a three day camping trip in the Alabama woods for a little over a month from now.

I know I’ll end up spending a lot of time Facebooking and playing games on my iPhone while we’re there because I always get bored after just a couple of hours.

My problem is my phone’s battery always dies on the first day and I don’t have a way to charge it back up. Can you tell me the best way to keep it charged for the entire three days without having to spend an arm and a leg?

We’ll have a usable cell signal where we’re going, but we won’t have an electrical outlet to plug a charger into or handy access to our vehicle for using a car charger. Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Q&A: How do I get my PC to boot up after Windows Update failed?

Posted on February 17, 2015

windows-7Question from Sierra F.:  Rick, I’m in trouble and I need your help!

My computer was installing Windows Updates when the power flickered off and back on. It happened so quickly that the computer didn’t even shut down, but it somehow aborted the update process and an error on the screen said the update wasn’t successful.

I tried to install the updates again, but it said no updates were available. I then tried to restart the PC, but it hangs up about half way through the boot process. Please, please, please tell me how to fix this without reinstalling Windows 7? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!
