Q&A: Is it possible to use Two Factor Authentication without a cell phone?

Posted on May 20, 2017

google-voice-logoQuestion from Carl S.:  Hi Rick. Here’s a question that you probably haven’t received before, and I hope you can answer it for me.

I have a cabin up in the mountains and I spend a lot of time there. The cabin has Internet through Hughesnet but there’s no cell service up there at all.

I’ve been wanting to set up two-factor authentication on my online accounts, but I need to be able to access those accounts while I’m at the cabin. The problem is I don’t have cell service there so I wouldn’t be able to use my iPhone to retrieve the login codes.

Do you know of any way I can set up two factor authentication and still be able to access my accounts when I can’t use my mobile phone?

How to enable Two Factor Authentication on your WordPress blog

Posted on August 10, 2016

wordpress-logoImportant update: After using the Duo Two-Factor Authentication method described below for a few weeks I started experiencing several serious issues with it.

I was unable to get all of those issues resolved so I removed it from my blogs and stopped recommending it.

I now use and recommend the super-secure Google Authenticator plugin.

One of the most effective ways to prevent any online account from being hacked is to enable two-factor authentication on it.

In case you’re unfamiliar with how two-factor authentication works, it basically adds an additional layer of security to the login process by sending a special code to your mobile phone that you must enter in order to complete the login process.

Once two-factor authentication has been enabled, if a person doesn’t have access to your phone, he/she won’t be able to log into your account even if they have your username and password. It’s really that simple.

I have already posted instructions for enabling two-factor authentication on several of the most popular online services, and in this post I’m going to explain the easiest way to enable it on your WordPress blog(s).  [Read more…]

It seems that fraudsters are all over the Internet these days, and many of them spam us with messages that turn up in our email inboxes on a daily basis.

And they’re pretty good at producing some rather legitimate-looking, and fairly convincing messages too.

If you’ve been using the Internet for any length of time, you’ve no doubt seen a bunch of them.

Yet another Facebook-related scam is making the rounds, but this one isn’t being perpetrated on the Facebook website.

It’s actually taking place on Messenger app instead.

As Facebook scams go, this one is pretty simple but it’s also unusually widespread.

In a nutshell, the scam goes something like this…  [Read more…]

Well, the infamous “Target 50% Off Store-Wide” coupons have started popping back up on Facebook and Instagram again.

They usually pop up right before Thanksgiving but they’ve started making the rounds quite late this year.

These coupons sound pretty good, right? After all, who wouldn’t love to get a 50% discount on anything you can buy at Target?

The problem is, these coupons aren’t real. They’re nothing more than a ploy to get you to “Like” their Facebook page and visit a very realistic looking, but fake and malicious copy of Target’s website. [Read more…]
