Browse the Internet securely with your Opera browser’s built-in VPN feature

Posted on October 16, 2017

Important Update: Opera has announced that they’ll be removing the integrated VPN from their browsers on April 30, 2018.

I really enjoyed having my VPN seamlessly integrated with my web browser, but things are what they are. It sure was nice while it lasted.

Note: The original post begins below.

If you ever use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to securely use the Internet with your laptop or desktop PC, you should know that the fantastic Opera browser now has a VPN feature built right in to it!

Opera’s free VPN service allows you to safely access the Internet via open Wi-Fi hotspots such as those commonly found in restaurants, coffee shops and many other types of venues.

And the best part is you can do it without having to install a browser extension or sign into a VPS server!

Once the VPS feature is turned on, your Opera browser will automatically create a secure, encrypted connection between your PC and an Opera-owned VPN server. It really is as simple as that!

Simply follow the steps below to download the latest version of Opera and turn on the VPN feature:  [Read more…]

Simple guide to installing a self-hosted WordPress blog

Posted on June 17, 2017

wordpress-logoIn my opinion, WordPress is the most powerful blogging platform out there, and it’s completely free. Some of the largest and busiest websites on the Internet are powered by WordPress, and many of them bear no external resemblance whatsoever to a typical “blog”.

It’s easy to open a free account at WordPress.com and be blogging in 5 minutes, but there are several important advantages of installing WordPress on your own hosting account with your own domain name. And it’s really pretty easy to do!  [Read more…]

Posted on May 18, 2017

As you probably know, it’s getting harder with each passing day to protect your privacy on most major social media websites.

Some venues are worse than others, but they all seem to be getting more invasive with the passage of time.

While Facebook’s privacy issues are well-known, many Twitter users are unaware that they need to lock down their privacy settings as well.

The purpose of this post is to highlight several essential privacy tweaks that can make your interactions with Twitter safer and a bit less invasive of your personal and professional privacy.  [Read more…]

Yet another security flaw found in LastPass password manager

Posted on April 5, 2017

I’ve written before about the dangers of trusting a password manager to keep your passwords and the online accounts they correspond with secure.

Well, here’s yet another example that illustrates why I believe password managers are inherently risky.

One of the researchers with Google’s Project Zero has discovered and reported a very serious security flaw in one of the browser extensions that supports the popular LastPass password manager service.

According to the Google researcher, this flaw could potentially allow a hacker to insert malicious code into the flawed browser extension and steal your passwords – the very thing a password manager is supposed to prevent.  [Read more…]

Scam alert: Weebly has been hacked. Change your password ASAP!

Posted on October 26, 2016

scamPopular website creation service Weebly has been hacked, and the hackers were able to steal the usernames, email addresses, passwords and IP addresses belonging to over 43 million customers.

Weebly claims that the stolen passwords were in encrypted form, but if you have an account with them I strongly recommend that you log in to your account and change your password immediately. As they say, “better safe than sorry”.

They also claim that no credit card or bank account information was stolen, but I recommend that you monitor any accounts that are connected with your Weebly account for unusual activity anyway. Again, “better safe than sorry”.

Unfortunately, this Weebly breach is just the latest in a long string of successful hacking attacks, and I don’t see that string coming to an end any time soon. Therefore, I have a few suggestions for protecting all of your online accounts:
