Malwarebytes is now available for your Android phone

Posted on October 22, 2013

malwarebytes-for-androidMalwarebytes has long been one of my most used and most often recommended anti-malware programs, and now the company has released a version that runs on your Android phone.

Malwarebytes for Android still performs its highly effective malware scanning and removal services, but it also does several things that the PC version doesn’t do.

I won’t go into all of the new features, but I will tell you about one of the most interesting and useful ones…  [Read more…]

Unlock the door to your house by simply touching the deadbolt!

Posted on October 21, 2013

kwikset-kevoHave you ever had to put down the load of grocery bags you were carrying in order to fumble through your pocket or purse in search of your house key? Even worse, have you ever found yourself standing on the outside of a locked door because you forgot to take your keys with you when you left?

Of course we all have at one time or another, but the awesome Kwikset Kevo Bluetooth Deadbolt makes such misfortunes a thing of the past.

The Kwikset Kevo looks pretty much like a regular deadbolt on the outside, but inside is a tiny computer and bluetooth receiver that let you operate the lock using either your smart phone or the included key FOB. As long as you have your iPhone or FOB in your pocket or purse, you can unlock the deadbolt simply by touching it!  [Read more…]

Dreaded BSOD makes leap from Windows PCs to the iPhone 5S

Posted on October 14, 2013

bsodAnyone who has used a Microsoft Windows based PC for more than a few days has probably experienced the dreaded “Blue Screen of Death” at one time or another.

When one is greeted with a “BSOD”, the screen turns blue and displays a cryptic error message that even Bill Gates himself just might need an interpreter to understand. Oh, and then your PC sort of locks up on you, requiring a reboot before you can do anything else with it!  [Read more…]

Q&A: Is it possible to uninstall a bad Windows Update?

Posted on October 12, 2013

windows-update-logoQuestion from Brandon H.:  The other day I checked to see if there were any Windows Updates available for my PC and saw that there was an optional update for my video card available.

I installed the update and immediately after the reboot my PC began running very slowly. Programs take forever to load, web pages open slowly if at all, and none of my games will run correctly.

Is there any way to uninstall a bad update or will I need to reinstall Windows 7? What really sucks is this was an optional update which means I didn’t really have to install it in the first place!

How to fix non-responsive brightness controls on a Toshiba laptop

Posted on October 10, 2013

toshiba-laptopI have worked on several Toshiba laptops recently that seem to share a common problem: The function keys that lower and increase the screen brightness (usually Fn+F6 and Fn+F7) have stopped responding.

If the brightness controls on your Toshiba laptop are non-responsive, the procedure described below will most likely fix it:

1 – Shut down the laptop and unplug all cables and external adapters, including the AC power adapter.  [Read more…]
