Scam alert: Mac users now being targeted with Ransomware

Posted on March 8, 2016

scamScammers have been using ransomware to extort money from Windows users for a good while now, but over the past weekend a bunch of unlucky victims were hit with the first ransomware attacks to ever successfully target Apple Macs.

Ransomware works by encrypting the data on a computer’s hard drive, then informing the user that he’ll have to pay a ransom to the hacker in exchange for the decryption code.

In this case the scammers managed to infect version 2.90 of the popular “Transmission” app with the insidious KeRanger ransomware virus. The infected app was released on Friday, and users who downloaded it immediately infected their Macs with KeRanger.  [Read more…]

Posted on March 4, 2016

macbook-pro-mf839llaApple’s Macbook Pro line of laptops has earned the reputation of being rock-solid performers, albeit at a slightly higher price than you would expect to pay for a Windows laptop with the same basic hardware specs.

Apple apologizes for intentionally bricking customers’ iPhones (and releases a fix)

Posted on February 23, 2016

iphone-6-plusA couple of weeks ago I wrote a post explaining how you could brick your iPhone 6 by having it repaired by anyone other than Apple’s own techs.

To recap, Apple recently released an update to iOS that caused any iPhone 6 that was repaired by a third-party repair shop to freeze up and display a permanent “Error 53” the next time it was booted up.

Apple’s response to the thousands of customers who asked the company to fix the error was, in effect, “Sorry, but you’ll have to buy a new phone”.  [Read more…]
