Q&A: How can I find out which websites have access to my Facebook data?

Posted on April 1, 2021

Question from Mark:  I read your blog post explaining why it’s a bad idea to log into third-party websites with Facebook.

That’s some pretty scary stuff.

My question is how can I see which websites have access to my information right now?

The reason I’m asking is because I’ve used Facebook to log into lots of websites in the past, and I’ve forgotten what most of them were.

Why you should disable (most) background apps in Windows 10

Posted on March 26, 2021

As you probably know, Windows 10 comes with a bunch of apps pre-installed on your system.

In addition to those pre-installed apps you might have also installed one or more additional apps from the Microsoft Store.

By default, most of those apps run in the background at all times – even the ones you never use!

In most cases having all those apps running in the background serves no useful purpose, but it does have a couple of serious downsides: [Read more…]

Q&A: How do you erase an external hard drive with a Mac?

Posted on March 24, 2021

Question from Alan:  I bought a new 4TB external hard drive to hold my photos.

I bought the new drive because the 1TB drive I’ve been using to store my photos is full and I have a lot more pictures to scan and store.

My plan is to give the 1TB drive to my niece so she can use it with her iMac, but I want to completely erase everything from the drive before I give it to her.

That way she can start fresh with a blank drive.

Can you tell me how to completely erase this drive with my MacBook?

Rick’s Tech Tips Newsletter

Have you ever fallen asleep only to be awakened in the middle of the night by a phone call from someone who had no idea how late it was (or who simply didn’t care)?

Or perhaps you’ve signed up for a class and you’d rather not disturb everyone in the room with an endless barrage of notification sounds?

If you have an iPhone you can easily avoid situations like that by enabling a special mode called “Do Not Disturb” Here’s how:

1 – Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen.

2 – Tap the Focus icon (it looks like a crescent moon).

3 – Tap Do Not Disturb.

To disable “Do Not Disturb”, simply toggle the setting back to Off.

That’s all there is to it. Now you know how to enable and disable your iPhone’s “Do Not Disturb” feature.
