Q&A: How can I prevent WordPress from automatically installing updates?

Question from Edwin G.: I’m really upset Rick. I checked my email this morning and found that both of my WordPress blogs had been updated to the latest version during the night without my knowledge or consent. I don’t like that!

I’ve had problems in the past with WordPress core updates breaking my blogs so now I always update my blogs one at a time, then check to make sure everything still works before updating the next blog.

Is there a setting in WordPress that I can change to prevent it from installing updates automatically? If there is, I can’t find one.

Warning: Instagram accounts are currently being hacked in large numbers. Here’s how to protect yours.

Do you use Instagram? If so, there’s a very good chance that your account will get hacked very soon.

Right now hackers (who appear to be from Russia) are hacking into and taking control of Instagram accounts by the thousands.

In a nutshell, the hackers are somehow breaking into the accounts and changing both the username and password, making it impossible for the rightful account owners to log back in (or in many cases even locate the account). [Read more…]

Q&A: How do I redirect all 404 errors to the home page in WordPress?

Question from Seth P.: I have a WordPress blog that has several missing posts that I’ve deleted because they contained outdated information that was either incorrect or no longer relevant.

My blog now has lots of requests going to the 404 error page because those posts no longer exist.

I’d like to redirect all of those requests to my blog’s home page instead of displaying the 404 error page. How can I do that?

Google is shutting down their goo.gl URL shortener service

If you use the popular goo.gl URL shortener service from Google you’ll need to start using Bit.ly, Ow.ly or some other service to shorten (and optionally track) your URLs.

Google has just announced in a blog post that they’re planning to stop supporting the goo.gl service and transition existing users to their Firebase Dynamic Links service, starting this month.

As explained in their blog post, Google will be executing the transition in phases depending on the whether a user is new to goo.gl or already an existing user. [Read more…]
