Q&A: What’s the best laptop hard drive I can buy for $100 or less?

Posted on September 18, 2018

Question from Andy:  The 750GB hard drive in my laptop has started making strange noises and I’m afraid it’s about to go out on me. I need to replace it ASAP but I don’t know which drive I should buy to replace it with.

I’d really like to get an SSD to make the laptop run a lot faster, but my budget for the drive is only about $100 (or preferably less).

I checked around and the largest SSD I can get for that price is way too small for my needs. I really need something that’s at least as big as the drive that’s in the laptop right now.

Can you help me find the fastest hard drive I can get for $100 that’s at least 750GB?

Q&A: Should I replace a bad fan in my computer’s power supply?

Question from Dave H.:  Hi Rick. About 18 months ago I bought the parts and built a computer by following a guide I found on Youtube. It works great and I love it.

But now the fan in the power supply has started making a loud clunking sound and I can see it wobble when it spins. The fan has obviously gone bad.

My question is can I replace the bad fan in the power supply or should I just replace the entire thing. It wasn’t a cheap power supply (approx. $125) and I’m hoping I can just replace the fan and save some money. I’ll take your advice though whatever it turns out to be because I don’t want to ruin anything else inside the PC.

Q&A: Will DDR3-1600MHz RAM work with my DDR3-1333MHz motherboard?

Posted on September 3, 2018

computer-ramQuestion from Anthony J.:  Rick, I have a custom built PC with an ASUS motherboard that supports DDR3-1333MHZ RAM. It’s about 5 or 6 years old as best I can recall.

I want to upgrade the memory from 4GB to 8GB, but the only RAM sticks I could find locally are DDR3-1600MHZ. Will they work with my motherboard without damaging anything?

Q&A: How do I stop my Gmail messages from being forwarded to my ex’s email account?

Posted on August 27, 2018

gmailQuestion from Cindy T.:  I just found out that my ex is somehow causing all of my Gmail messages to be forwarded to his own email account.

I know he had the password to my account for a while because I let him use it when he was looking for a job (the lazy bum never did find one). I guess that’s when he set up the forwarding.

Anyway, how can I stop my emails from being forwarded to his account?

Rick’s answer:  Cindy, what you’ll need to do is log into your Gmail account and disable “Forwarding” in your account settings. Here’s how:  [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I get the “Compose New Email” box back to the center of the window in Gmail?

Posted on August 22, 2018

Question from Claire:  I use Gmail and when I click “Compose” button to write a new email the text box has always been centered in the Gmail window.

But this morning when I opened Gmail and clicked “Compose” the box opened in the lower right corner of the window.

I tried clicking on the title bar and dragging the box back to the center of the window, but it won’t budge.

I don’t like having the “Compose New Email” box way down there in the corner. How can I get it back to the center of the window?
