How to add a tile for the ‘Run’ command to the Start Menu in Windows 10

Posted on June 15, 2020

If you have Windows 10 on your computer, you might have noticed that the Start Button and Start Menu are back after taking a short hiatus with Windows 8.

One important thing that’s missing on the Windows 10 Start Menu however is a menu option for opening a “Run” box.

Well, there’s actually a way to open a “Run” box from the Start menu but it’s buried two levels deep in the “Windows System” section, and that makes opening a simple Run box more time-consuming than it should be.

Of course you can always quickly open a Run box by pressing the Windows+R key combination (that’s the way I always do it), but some folks prefer having it right on the Start Menu.

If you’re one of them, you can easily add a “Run” tile to the Start Menu on your Windows 10 PC. Here’s how: [Read more…]

Q&A: Can you help me find a Windows 10 printer driver for my printer?

Posted on June 13, 2020

Question from Sara J.:  I recently bought a new Windows 10 computer to replace my old Windows 7 machine.

Today I tried using my Lexmark printer with the new computer for the first time but it’s not working right.

When I try to print something the printer makes a clicking noise like it’s going to start printing but it never prints anything.

I think I might need to download a new printer driver but the latest driver that’s listed on the Lexmark website is for Windows 8.1.

Can you help me find a Windows 10 driver for this printer? It’s been a good one and I’d like to keep using it if I can.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Q&A: How can I prevent my Windows tablet’s onscreen keyboard from capitalizing the first letter when I type something?

Posted on May 29, 2020

Question from Craig L.:  I just bought a new Windows 10 tablet and there’s something that’s driving me nuts.

Every time I start typing something on the onscreen keyboard it automatically capitalizes the first letter and I have to go back and change it.

That really irritates me because most of the stuff I type doesn’t need any capitalization at all.

Is there a way to make this tablet quit capitalizing the first letter when I start typing?

How to use ‘Quick Assist’ to provide remote assistance to another Windows 10 user

Posted on April 24, 2020

Microsoft added a number of handy new features to Windows 10 since it was first released, and one of my favorites Quick Assist.

In a nutshell, Quick Assist is a remote assistance utility that lets one Windows 10 user help any other Windows 10 user resolve a computer problem over the Internet.

This is how it works…  [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I prevent notifications from popping up in the lower-right corner of the screen in Windows 10?

Posted on January 22, 2020

Question from Edwin:  My old Windows XP computer that I really love finally died and I had no choice but to buy a new computer.

I’d been dreading having to switch to Windows 10 but after using it for a while I’ve found out I actually like it.

But one thing about it really irritates me. I hate having all those notification messages pop up at random times in the lower-right corner of the screen.

Is there any way to turn those notifications off?
