Facebook has risen from its humble beginnings in Mark Zuckerberg’s college dorm room to become one of the most powerful and most-used entities on the Internet.

For example, did you know that Facebook now has over 2 billion registered users? That’s an astounding number considering there are only about 7.5  billion people living on the entire planet!

Even more astounding to me is how the folks at Facebook keep the site up and running as smoothly as they do given the mind-boggling number of people who are actively using the site at any moment in time.  [Read more…]

Twitter now allows you to opt to receive direct messages from anyone

twitter-logoAs you probably already know, Twitter has never allowed their users to send direct messages (DMs) to other users who don’t follow them. But as of today, that is no longer the case.

A new security setting is being rolled out right now that will let any Twitter user opt to receive DMs from any other Twitter user, whether they follow them or not.

If you prefer not to receive DMs from non-followers you won’t have to do a thing because the new feature is disabled by default.

How to set up ‘Trusted Contacts’ for your Facebook account as an additional security option

Facebook has added another option for regaining access to your account should you ever forget your password and not be able to reset it for some reason.

Now you can designate up to five of your Facebook Friends as “Trusted Contacts”, each of whom will receive a security code from Facebook on your behalf after you click on the “Forgot your password?” link.

After you collect the security codes from three of your five trusted friends, you can enter them on the Password Reset screen and then choose a new password.  [Read more…]
