Question from Jackie:  I read that Windows 10 will let you log in with a numeric PIN instead of a password sort of like when you use an ATM card.

Can you tell me how to set up a pin on my computer?

Question from Joyce:  I recently bought a new computer with Windows 10 on it to replace my old Windows 7 laptop now that it’s no longer safe to use.

Thanks for the info you provided on that by the way.

My niece helped me set the new machine up while she was in for the holidays but now she’s gone back and she isn’t here to help me.

What I’m wanting to do is remove the login password that she put on it because I live alone and no one else has access to the computer.

Can you tell me how to remove that password? It’s a hassle having to enter it every time I turn the machine on.

Q&A: If I hide my WiFi network’s name will I still be able to connect to it?

Posted on June 15, 2021

Question from Jennie:  I overheard a conversation the other day that really interested me, and I want to see what you think about it.

A young man told his friend that hiding the WiFi network name in his router would prevent his neighbors from finding and connecting to the Internet over his network.

I live in an apartment building and I’m pretty sure I have this same problem right now.

I’d like to follow that guy’s advice but I want to make sure I can connect new devices of my own (as well as those of friends) to my WiFi network with the network name hidden. Will I be able to?

Q&A: What’s your recommendation for securely storing passwords?

Posted on May 4, 2021

Question from John:  Rick, I’ve seen multiple articles regarding the dangers of using password managers or storing passwords in browsers.

Ok, I get it, but the flip side is also very daunting.

For me, I have over a dozen Internet accounts, and keeping track of all those passwords without some kind of automated manager is almost impossible.

Believe it or not, each and every password is extremely complex and UNIQUE.

Here’s an example of one password: A422A#5zkhN32B

This does not bode well for memorization.

I refuse to use any password manager that stores this information anywhere other than my local computer. Roboform used to, but now stores in the cloud.

I would be very interested in your recommendations for this situation. Thanks.

How to reset the username and password on a router

Posted on April 7, 2021

There might come a time when you’ll need to log in to your router’s control panel to change a setting (most likely the password for your Wi-Fi network).

But what happens if you can’t log in because you forgot the router’s username and/or password?

As luck would have it, it’s very easy to reset a router’s username and password back to its factory defaults. [Read more…]
