Q&A: Where can I download Microsoft Office for free?

Posted on May 1, 2024

Question from Danita.:  I bought a used laptop from a friend a while back and it had Microsoft Office on it.

When I asked him if he had the installation disk he said he had downloaded it from a site that gives away programs for free.

The hard drive in the laptop stopped working a few days ago and I had to have it replaced.

Can you give me the link to the page where I can download MS Office for free? [Read more…]

Q&A: How do I type a division sign into a Word document?

Posted on January 10, 2023

Question from Hannah:  I know this is probably a stupid question, but I just can’t figure out how to do something that seems like it should be really simple.

I’m writing an important paper for my math class and I can’t figure out how to type the division sign in Microsoft Word.

I can type the signs for all the other math operations, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to type the division sign. It’s not on my keyboard!

If you can tell me how to do this I’ll be eternally grateful. Thanks in advance for your help!  [Read more…]

Q&A: How can I stop MS Word from automatically inserting lines in my documents?

Posted on April 1, 2022

Question from Kelly:  I’ve always used Google Docs for my writing but I recently bought Microsoft Office because that’s what I’ll be using at my next job.

I’ve been practicing with Word and it seems to be ok, but sometimes it will place a random horizontal line in the document when I type certain characters.

How can I make it stop doing that?  [Read more…]

Q&A: Is there any way to recover a Microsoft Word file that I closed without saving it?

Posted on September 26, 2020

Question from Anita:  Hi Rick. I hope you don’t think I’m a stupid person after reading this, because I’m really not. I prefer to say I’m “spacey” lol.

Anyway, I have an unfortunate tendency to click “Don’t Save” instead of “Save” when I finish working on a document in Microsoft Word. I know, it’s a stupid thing to do but it just sort of happens before I even realize it.

Is there a way to recover a Word file that I neglected to save? Thanks in advance for your help!

Q&A: How do I change the formatting of a word everywhere that it occurs in a MS Word document?

Posted on November 13, 2013

microsoft-wordQuestion from Keith D.:  Rick, I write rather lengthy documents in Microsoft Word on a regular basis, and I often go back and manually change the formatting of every instance of certain words or phrases (i.e. font color, italics, bold, etc.) to make them stand out from the rest of the text.

It would save me a ton of time if there was a way to change the formatting of every instance of a word or phrase at once. Is there a way to do that?

Rick’s answer:  There sure is Keith, and it’s a fairly simple process:  [Read more…]
