Prey – A great free app for recovering your lost or stolen laptop or mobile device

Posted on February 21, 2013

preyEvery day thousands of laptops, tablets and smart phones are lost or stolen, and relatively few of them are ever recovered and returned to their rightful owners. But a free app called Prey can tilt the odds greatly in your favor.

Prey is a small, discrete app that “hides” on your laptop or mobile device and lies dormant until you need it. Then if the device is ever lost or stolen you can easily “wake it up” with a remote signal sent by you either through the Internet or via an SMS message. Once activated, Prey gets right down to business by performing the following actions: [Read more…]

Q&A: Can I buy an external hard drive that works with both my PC and Mac?

Posted on February 17, 2013

ntfs-for-macQuestion from Chad:  I’m in desperate need of a USB external hard drive that I can plug in to my Mac when I’m at home and then take it to work with me to plug into the Windows 7 PC I use there. The larger the better, but 2TB or larger will suffice.

I’ll be using this drive to transfer large video files that are several gigabytes each. Can you tell me where I can find a drive that meets this requirement? I’ve checked all over the web with no luck. Thanks! [Read more…]

Want to ask me a tech question?

question-markHave a question about your computer, smartphone, tablet or other tech gadget?

How about something concerning Social Media or the blogging world?

If so, I just might know the answer (or at least know where to find it).

Just ask away and I’ll be glad to help if I can.

Important: Your best shot at getting a timely answer to your question is to use the form at the top of this page to sign up for my free Tech Tips Newsletter, then hit the Reply button on the welcome email you’ll receive.

By necessity, I give preference to questions asked by my Newsletter subscribers. Unlike social media, I check my email daily so your message will be seen and responded to a lot faster.

I try my very best to answer all requests for help within 24 hours or less.

To ensure the fastest resolution to your issue possible, please be as specific and detailed with your question as you can. The more info you can give me up front the lower the odds I’ll need to contact you for additional info.

If possible, please include a full description of the problem along with the brand/model of your computer, smart phone, tablet or other device and the specific version of the operating system that’s running on it (i.e. Windows 10, Ubuntu Linux, iOS 13, Android 10.0, etc.)

Now that the preliminaries are out of the way, please feel free to sign up for my Newsletter using the form at the top of this page, then ask away!

pen-and-paperThanks for visiting Rick’s Daily Tips!

I welcome your comments, suggestions, tech questions, and ideas for tips.

Please feel free to contact me at any time and I’ll try my best to respond to your suggestion or query.

Important: I truly enjoy helping people solve their tech problems, but unfortunately I receive so many tech questions on a daily basis that I can’t possibly answer all of them.

Here are a few tips for getting your question answered:

1 – I receive dozens of questions via email every day, and there’s simply no way I can answer all of them in a timely manner.

All things being equal, I usually answer questions from folks who have subscribed to my Daily Tech Newsletter first. After all, it’s only fair that those who help me out by subscribing and engaging with my newsletter get their questions answered first, right?

Therefore, if you’ll take just a moment to sign up for the newsletter you’ll greatly increase the chance that your question will be answered.

2 – Be as specific and detailed with your question as possible. If you can, please include a full description of the problem along with the brand/model of your computer, smart phone, tablet or other device and the specific version of the operating system that’s running on it (i.e. Windows 10/11, Ubuntu Linux, iOS 16, Android 12, etc.)

3 – If your question is selected and answered, sending me a timely update as to whether the answer helped solve your problem will greatly increase the chance that your question will be posted in the “Tech Questions and Answers” section of RicksDailyTips.com.

Now that the preliminaries are out of the way, feel free to contact me at [email protected]  and I’ll try my best to get back to you ASAP.

Even better, simply reply to the welcome email you’ll receive after signing up for my newsletter.
