How to ‘paste as plain text’ on a Mac

Posted on March 15, 2024

In response to a recent question from a reader, I wrote this post explaining how to paste info you’ve copied to the Windows Clipboard as plain text (i.e. without the formatting such as bold and italics included).

If you read that post you’ll recall that my answer was to press the Ctrl+V key combination.

After that post was published several people contacted me to ask if it’s possible to paste as plain text on a Mac.

Well, the answer is yes. In fact, there are actually two ways to do it, one of which also involves the use of a keyboard shortcut.

To paste as plain text on a Mac, you have option of using a slightly longer key combination than the one used on a Windows machine:

Command+Option+Shift+V

Yeah, I know. That requires a bit of manual dexterity (not to mention a good memory).

But guess what? You can also paste as plain text using your Mac’s mouse. Here’s how:

1 – Click Edit on the top menu bar.

2 – Click Paste and Match Style.

That’s all there is to it. Now you know two ways to paste items that were copied to your Mac’s Clipboard as plain text, without the pre-existing formatting.
