Blockbuster closes the last of its stores

Posted on November 7, 2013

blockbuster-logoBack in the days before Netflix, Redbox and streaming video, Blockbuster stood high atop the video rental market. But today marks the end of that era as Blockbuster’s parent company Dish Network has announced the closure of the company’s 300 remaining brick and mortar video stores.

Now that current movies can be ordered on demand and delivered within minutes right to your computer or television set, there is little need to purchase them on physical discs. And those who do still prefer to watch their videos from discs can rent them for just over a buck a day at their nearest Redbox kiosk.  [Read more…]

Q&A: How do I get rid of annoying Manycam pop-ups after I’ve uninstalled it?

Posted on November 5, 2013

manycam-logoQuestion from Demetrius A.:  I used a program called “Manycam” for a while but then it started crashing and causing problems. I uninstalled it, but it still gives me pop-ups every time I boot up my computer. How can I get rid of it for good?

Rick’s answer:  Hi Demetrius. The built-in Windows uninstaller does a poor job at removing all the bits and pieces of a program, and the remnants that are left over can be both annoying and dangerous. That’s why I recommend using Geek Uninstaller instead. This awesome free utility completely uninstalls any program, and cleans up all the garbage that’s left over too.  [Read more…]

Q&A: Why does my web browser always take me to www.get-new-java.com?

Posted on November 1, 2013

no-javaQuestion from Amil T:  I have a Dell Latitude E5430 running Windows 7 Pro. Ever since last night my web browser always takes me to a website that wants me to update Java. The URL is get-new-java.com.

It doesn’t matter which browser I use or whether I type a URL into the address bar directly or click on a link on my Favorites, it always goes to that website where it prompts me to download a new version of Java. Is this legitimate or do I maybe have a virus?

Rick’s answer:  Amil, you definitely have a virus that’s been making the rounds of late. Whatever you do, DO NOT click that download link!

The free version of Malwarebytes used in conjunction with your regular antivirus program should detect and remove all traces of the “get-new-java” virus. Follow these directions:  [Read more…]

Apple admits to battery problem with the iPhone 5S

Posted on October 31, 2013

iphone-5sMany users of the new Apple iPhone 5S smart phone have complained that their phones take forever to charge and that the batteries die far quicker than they should. Apple has investigated the issue and discovered that some iPhone 5S’s do indeed suffer from  a serious battery issue.

Since battery life is one of the most important attributes for any mobile device, this is a very big deal. If you believe that your iPhone 5S might be affected by this battery issue, you should either contact Apple or return it to the place where you bought it right away. The fix (or a replacement) is free.

My recommendation is to try to return it to the retailer you bought it from first. They just might give you a replacement on the spot. But either way, it will definitely worth your time to get this issue taken care as soon as possible.
