Q&A: Is it worthwhile to double the RAM when buying a new laptop?

Posted on April 20, 2018

(#ad)

Question from Ashley L:  I’m getting ready to buy a new laptop and the model I’m wanting comes with 4GB of DDR4 RAM but I can add 4GB more (for 8GB total) for an extra $75.

I have two questions for you concerning the RAM options:

1 – Do you think doubling the RAM to 8GB is worth it for Windows 10?

2 – Is $75 a reasonable price to pay for an extra 4GB?

Thanks in advance for your advice. It’ll be a big help!

Q&A: How do I prevent a folder from freezing up while I’m trying to open it?

Posted on April 19, 2018

Question from Paula:  My computer is a Dell desktop running Windows 10 and I’m having an irritating problem with it.

I have a folder that I’ve been using for months and all of a sudden it gets stuck when I try to open it. It just freezes up for a while and displays the message “Working on it…“.

If I wait long enough the folder will eventually open and I can use it like I always have, but it seems to take longer and longer every day. It took well over a minute to open a little while ago.

How can I stop this folder from freezing up on me? All the other folders on my computer open just fine.

If your hearing isn’t as good as it used to be, chances are you have to crank up the volume on your TV to a level that’s uncomfortable for everyone else.

If that’s the case, there’s a very simple way that you can enjoy watching TV at a volume you can easily hear while everyone else listens at a normal volume. All you need is an inexpensive set of wireless infrared headphones. The ones I like best are made by Sony.

The Sony MDR-IF245RK Wireless IF Headphones (#ad) come with a small infrared transmitter that plugs into your TV set. The audio is then transmitted wirelessly to the headphones which let you adjust the volume to your liking.  [Read more…]

How to disable ‘Throttling’ on your iPhone in iOS 11.3

Posted on April 17, 2018

As you might recall, back in December 2017 Apple admitted that they have been intentionally causing older iPhones to run slower.

Their stated reason for this “throttling” is to prevent iPhones with older batteries from shutting down during periods of heavy use.

Needless to say, once the word got out that Apple was intentionally making their phones run slower than they were capable of running, the backlash among iPhone users was both immediate and intense.

Personally, I think having the option to throttle your iPhone to keep it from shutting down on you is a good thing.

The problem is how Apple chose to execute the throttling.  [Read more…]
