The latest recurring phishing scheme to start making the rounds again is targeting AT&T customers.

Although the wording of the fraudulent emails vary a bit, they all warn you that if you don’t click the link in the email and “update your mailbox” your AT&T email account will be closed.

Here’s an example of what you need to be on the lookout for: [Read more…]

Q&A: Is Substack primarily a newsletter platform or a blog?

Posted on July 19, 2024

Question from Michael:  Hi, Rick. I look forward to getting your newsletter every morning. I’m fairly tech savvy but I almost always learn something new.

Simply put, I grew weary of not being able to work during the outages that frequently shut down the power grid in my rural neighborhood.

I procured the parts necessary to build that first solar setup and I was so impressed with the results that I decided to take my entire home (mostly) off-grid, one step at a time.  [Read more…]

Q&A: Can I safely disable User Account Control in Windows?

Posted on July 17, 2024

Question from Charles:  I updated my PC from Windows 10 to Windows 11 a while back.

Ever since then I’ve been getting “User Account Control” warnings several times a month, and I ALWAYS get them when I’m trying to install something new or make a simple settings change.

I can’t seem to do hardly anything at all with getting hit with a warning.

I know that UAC is meant to prevent me from doing something stupid and trashing my system, but I’m an experienced user and I know which types of things I need to avoid.

My question is do you think it would be safe to disable UAC? I really don’t think I need it.  [Read more…]
