Q&A: How can I tell if my phone’s wall charger is bad?

Posted on August 5, 2018

phone-chargerQuestion from Judy D:.  Is there any way to tell if a phone charger is bad? The wall charger that came with my phone seems to work ok but it takes forever to charge my battery.

It usually takes a little over 2 hours to charge my phone completely up when the battery is really low, but the charger that came with my sister’s phone will do it in about an hour.

Do you think I need to buy a new charger?

Rick’s answer:  Judy, your phone’s charger is probably working just fine even though it charges your phone less quickly than your sister’s.

The amount of time it takes for a phone battery to charge depends on the amount of electrical current being supplied by the charger. The more current the charger is able to supply, the faster it will top off the battery.

The charger that came with your sister’s phone is more than likely just a more powerful model than the one that came with yours.

You can always buy a new, more powerful charger if having a shorter charge time would be important to you, but the one you already have should do just fine.

Bonus tip #1: Some computers also will charge a phone faster than others depending on the type of USB ports they have.

A computer that’s equipped with USB 3.0 ports will charge a battery a lot faster than one that has older, and less powerful USB 2.0 ports.

If your PC doesn’t have USB 3.0 ports, you can always add a few of them. Read this post for more information.
