Q&A: Should I buy a new PC with Windows 7 on it?

windows-7Question from Henry P.:  I’ve been shopping online for a new computer and I found out that there are still some Windows 7 computers available. My question is should I buy one?

I really like Windows 7 but I want to make sure I won’t end up buying a headache now that Windows 10 is the norm.

Do you know of any reason why I should buy something with Windows 10 on it instead of Windows 7? Something I’m missing perhaps?

Rick’s answer:  I get asked this question a lot Henry, and I have a simple answer: There’s really no reason why you can’t buy a computer with Windows 7.

Microsoft has said they’ll keep supplying security updates for Windows 7 until January 14, 2020. That means you’ll likely have about three years to use your Windows 7 PC while still receiving the all-important security updates for it.

When January 2020 rolls around, you can either move on to a new PC, upgrade Windows 7 to the then-current version of Windows or simply ditch Windows altogether and install Linux for free. In other words you’ll have several good options to choose from.

I hope this helps Henry. Good luck!
