Q&A: Where can I find a Windows 8.1 sound card driver for an older PC?

Posted on April 9, 2014

windows-8-1Question from Annette H.:  I have a Compaq Presario 7200 that I just can’t bear to part with. I recently upgraded it to Windows 8.1 and I’m absolutely thrilled with it!

But there’s one problem that I really need your help with. The sound card isn’t working and the Device Manager says there’s no driver for it installed.

The sound drivers on the website don’t include drivers for Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, only Windows XP through Windows 7. Is there anything I can do or will I need to buy a new sound card?

Rick’s answer:  I don’t think you’ll need a new sound card Annette. You said the website lists a Windows 7 driver for the Presario 7200, and I feel pretty good about your chances of making it work with Windows 8.1.

If I were you I’d download the Windows 7 sound driver and give it a try. I think you’ll be pleased with the results. Please let me know how it goes.

Update from Annette:  Rick, you’re awesome! It worked perfectly! Thank you so much!!!
